While serving in the Mississippi Delta in his previous position as the president of Southern Bancorp Capital Partners for five years, he saw firsthand how critical public education was for the long-term sustainability and growth of the local community. While in Arkansas, Ben conceived of the Arkadelphia Promise program, which ensured all college financing for all students graduating from the public high school in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The first class of Promise graduates went to college this past fall. For his work in the Delta, he received the 2007 Arkansas Non-Profit Executive of the Year award. He also received the 2008 Critical Impact Award, the highest honor accorded by the Council on Foundations, the largest association of foundations in North America.

His determination to make post-secondary education accessible for all students led to the creation of iPivoted.

Prior to his tenure at Southern Bancorp Capital Partners, Ben spent ten years overseas where he headed microfinance programs for ACDI/VOCA in Central Asia and then FINCA in Armenia and later in Tanzania. During his leadership of the Tanzania program, it increased from over 4,000 active micro-entrepreneurs to more than 27,000. The Tanzania program also became financially sustainable. When he initially arrived at FINCA Tanzania, the program was entirely grant funded. When he departed three years later, the program was entirely funded through debt instruments from local commercial banks.
