<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: separate; color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-family: Palatino, Georgia, Baskerville, serif; line-height: 18px; "><p>Michael Smith is an independent filmmaker based in Chicago, Illinois. He received a BA from Columbia College in 2000 and an MA in Film Production from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California in 2004. After writing and directing numerous shorts on film and video, he embarked on production of his debut feature <em>The Minx</em>, a self-financed effort that was shot on location in Chicago and Hong Kong in late 2005 and early 2006. The movie was picked up by Echelon Entertainment of Glendale, California and was released on DVD on May 22, 2007. His follow-up short film <em>At Last, Okemah!</em> has been an Official Selection of ten film and music festivals across the U.S., including the 2011 Bare Bones Film Festival in Muskogee, Oklahoma where it won awards for Best Musical Picture and Audience Choice for Favorite Short. Locally, it played the 2011 Indie Incubator Film Fest where it won the Best of Fest award, the 2009 <a title="Chicago International REEL Shorts Festival" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_International_REEL_Shorts_Festival" style="color: rgb(95, 95, 95); ">Chicago International REEL Shorts Festival</a> where it won an Audience Choice award<sup> </sup>and the 2010 Chicago International Music and Movies Festival where it effectively “opened” a concert by cast member and punk legend <a title="Jon Langford" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Langford" style="color: rgb(95, 95, 95); ">Jon Langford</a>. This unique double bill was a “Recommended” screening by Cine-File, Chicago’s guide to independent and alternative cinema.</p><p><br></p><p>Smith teaches Film Studies at schools throughout the greater Chicago area including Oakton Community College, Triton College, Harold Washington College and the College of Lake County and also maintains the Chicago-centric film blog whitecitycinema.com.</p></span>
