Living to help others!
Janette Meraz was born and raised in San Diego, CA. When Janette was only six years old, her parents divorced and her mom was left to raise her and her siblings. Janette has two older brothers and one younger sister. Along with her mother and her siblings, they moved to National City, CA where her grandmother once lived. Even with the help of her oldest brother, Janette felt the need to help her mother out as much as she could. Since their transition, Janette has proven her dedication to her academics knowing that this would be the easiest way to one day live for her mom just as her mom has lived for her and her siblings. While attending Sweetwater Union High School, Janette also worked alongside her mom to make ends meet. Janette achieved good grades and was also highly involved outside of the classroom. In the spring of 2009, Janette received notice of her admission to the University of California, Berkeley. This was a dream that she never thought would come true.

Janette Meraz, at 20, is a third year at UC Berkeley. She is studying American Studies with a concentration in American Public Policy and minoring in Public Policy. Janette is dedicated to her academics, but she is also highly involved in various organizations. Through Hermanas Unidas, she dedicates herself to outreaching to Latina women (although not limited to Latinas) at UC Berkeley and helps them retain themselves in a place where we get lost much too often. She also outreaches to under-represented communities in order to encourage and inspire students to pursue higher education. Although Janette was lost in different fields her first few years of college, she found herself after an unavoidable event that happened. On October 15, 2010, her mother was detained by immigration, but she was able to stay here and fight for her case. Now, her mother is pursuing legal citizenship and Janette and her siblings are dedicated to making it happen for their mother. Janette now hopes to one day attend law school and make a difference in under-represented communities like her own.

Help Janette and her family keep their mother with them.
