Taking a Stand to Make a Difference For Abused and Neglected Thoroughbred Racehorses

I have successfully saved 7 of these beautiful athletes from the rigors of the claiming ranks. The advantage of being on the inside was that I got to see firsthand what goes on behind the scenes in horse racing. Some of the things I saw disgusted me. It made me want to do something about it. I realize that this sport has gone on for decades and will probably go on for decades to come; but, I feel someone must help these horses now.

From the "inside" of the horse racing industry, I have been trying to change the way that the racehorses are being treated. I have spent thousands of my own money running full page ads that reached across the US and Canada, to bring awareness about the ethical treatment of horses. I have received countless encouraging emails, letters and calls from horse owners and lovers. I also found a website that had a kind and supportive comment about what I am doing: http://www.greenbutgame.org/2007/10/07/whats-the-opposite-of-greed/

On a personal note, Most of the racehorses I have bought, claimed or rescued were in need of medical treatment. I gave them the best feed, vitamins, and medical care not because of what they can do for me, but because of what I thought they were owed. One of my horses, Muscle 'n Mane, was one such horse. Over the years, he was abused, ridiculed and stuck in the claiming ranks. I wanted to spare him from this horrible treatment, so, I dropped a claim on him. I then found myself embroiled in a legal battle with his former owner and trainer to keep him. I was wrongfully accused of bribing Muscle's grooms to find out information about Muscle before the claiming race. It hurt me because I knew I was innocent; but I had to fight for Muscle. I was more concerned about losing this beautiful horse than worrying about my reputation. Of course, it was damaged because of it. I was now known as an owner who dared to challenge a trainer. In the end, the grooms testified that I did not do what I was accused of. I fought this emotional legal battle and won the best prize of all...Muscle 'n Mane!

There are many big, famous organizations fighting for animal rights.
