Gloria Lockhart

San Pedro, California, United States

Hold onto your dream

Gloria Lockhart was a scrawny little girl born into segregation in 1946 in Eudora, Arkansas. Abandoned at an early age, she moved to Lansing, Michigan where she was adopted. Teachers, afraid to touch her because of the color of her skin, told her she was incapable of learning. Even though Gloria heard "you can't" more times than she heard "you can," she earned a master's degree from the University of Michigan during one of the greatest times of civil unrest the United States has known. She was the first in her family to graduate from college. Gloria later went on to develop an international program for disadvantaged youth; and to become one of the first African American women to reach the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Today, Gloria is the President and CEO of a non-profit organization in Los Angeles where people are being helped to move from poverty to self-sufficiency. In recognition of her professional accomplishments, exceptional service, and compassionate community involvement, Gloria was awarded Woman of the Year by former Assemblymember Betty Karnette of the 54th District. Gloria is the author of a soon to be released memoir, Unmasking: A Woman's Journey. This is Gloria's story from 1946 to the present, a social worker who struggled with the very issues for which she counseled others--abandonment, adoption, molestation, segregation, racism, bullying, kidnapping, and domestic violence. Gloria never lost sight of her dreams, and eventually rose to a position of leadership as President and CEO of a non-profit organization where she now empowers others to follow their dreams as well. Her courage will inspire you; her experiences will disturb you, but her unmasking, becomes a compass to guide others through diffficult times. Just one of the challenges experienced by Gloria along her journey would have crippled one with less fortitude, resilience and strength of character. Her perseverance and determination in the face of extreme odds has brought her to where she is today--a highly respected role model.

Gloria is a single parent of a daughter in the field of entertainment in New York. Gloria's hobbies are cycling, kickboxing, travelling, reading, photojournalism, and motivational speaking.
