Imire: Rhino & Wildlife Conservation
Harare, Zimbabwe
Black rhino breeding and release programme based in Eastern Zimbabwe.
Imire was begun as a cattle farm in 1952. During the 1970s game was reintroduced back onto the fertile farmland and, like Noah, the animals came in 2 by 2. During the early 1980s, Norman Travers, Imire's founder, was offered an orphaned baby elephant from a sanctuary in Harare. By 1987 Norman was a respected conservationist and won custodianship of seven orphaned baby black rhino from the Matusadona National Park in Northern Zimbabwe. And so the black rhino breeding and release programme began.
