Working on a sustainable future.

With Ride to Rio, I expect to take that philosophy up a few notches.</span><br><span style="font-size:16px;font-family:Arial;color:#222222;background-color:transparent;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;"></span><br><span style="font-size:16px;font-family:Arial;color:#222222;background-color:transparent;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;">My name is Naomi Devine. Growing up in the heart of the Great Lakes region, I came to appreciate the value of pristine ecosystems at an early age—especially after seeing, first hand, the impacts of contaminated natural areas. I was barely a teenager when Rio de Janeiro hosted the first United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, two decades back.</span><br><span style="font-size:16px;font-family:Arial;color:#222222;background-color:transparent;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;"></span><br><span style="font-size:16px;font-family:Arial;color:#222222;background-color:transparent;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;">I have lived and breathed sustainability ever since—through my schooling and work in the academic, government, and non-profit sectors in British Columbia, Canada.</span><br><span style="font-size:16px;font-family:Arial;color:#222222;background-color:transparent;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;"></span><br><span style="font-size:16px;font-family:Arial;color:#222222;background-color:transparent;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;">Most recently, I was the team lead for Whistler2020, the resort municipality’s internationally recognized sustainability plan. Prior to that, I helped shape policy and planning to reduce carbon pollution, and helped accelerate Whistler’s journey toward sustainability through its participation in the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Before moving to the mountains I helped forge the University of Victoria’s first sustainability policy and action plan. </span><br><span style="font-size:16px;font-family:Arial;color:#222222;background-color:transparent;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;"></span><br><span style="font-size:16px;font-family:Arial;color:#222222;background-color:transparent;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;">I’m no stranger to United Nations conferences. I was a Canadian Youth Delegate to the UN Convention on Climate Change Conference in Nairobi, Kenya in 2006, and co-founded Common Energy—an organization working to reduce global warming pollution and improve quality of life. I also catalysed a network of youth environmental organizations across British Columbia.</span><br><span style="font-size:16px;font-family:Arial;color:#222222;background-color:transparent;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;"></span><br><span style="font-size:16px;font-family:Arial;color:#222222;background-color:transparent;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;">I am proud to have served as vice-chair of the Environment and Shoreline Advisory Committee for the city of Victoria, British Columbia, and of my continuing role as an appointee to British Columbia’s Climate Action Team.</span>
