Naomi Srikandi Naomi Srikandi is an artist born in Yogyakarta, 1975. Coming from a large family of actors, dancers, musicians, poets and playwrights, she has been exposed to performing arts since early years. In 1994 Naomi joined Teater Garasi, an artists collective and laboratory of performing arts known for its commitment to develop fresh and genuine theater/performing arts idioms in attempt to build critical dialogue with its public/society. Naomi's concerns about sexual politics can be seen in her directorial dÃ©but Shakuntala, a monologue adapted from a character in Ayu Utami's novels Saman and Larung; the first version was perfomed at Lembaga Indonesia Perancis Yogyakarta (2007) and the second one was performed in Festival Salihara at Teater Salihara Jakarta (2008). Being noted as one of Indonesia's young emerging director Naomi received the EWA (Empowering Women Artists) 2010 from Kelola Foundation, supported by Hivos, Ford Foundation and Biyan. The EWA program granted her two years supports for her latest theatre projects: Medea Media (2010), a loose adaptation of Euripidesâ€™ Medea taken further to discuss the horrid relationship between media and society through the display of gender based violence in Indonesian television show; and her recent work Goyang Penasaran (2011), adapted from Intan Paramaditha's short story poses a question on the economy of seeing/being seen within the intricate relationship between the sexuality discourse, politics, religion, and violence in Indonesia. As an actor Naomi started at the age of four, she had been awarded The Best Actress for her acting in Motinggo Busyeâ€™s Malam Jahanam in the 1993 Yogyakarta High School Theatre Festival. She played in Teater Garasiâ€™s highlighted productions under the Waktu Batu Project initiated and directed by Yudi Ahmad Tajudin: Waktu Batu #1. The Encountered Stories in a Waiting Room, Waktu Batu #2 One Hundred Rites of Angsts And Whose Face Cracked Up, and Waktu Batu #3. Deux Ex Machina and My Feelings For You (2001-2004) performed in Yogyakarta Arts Festival (Yogyakarta, 2003), The Art Summit International Festival (Jakarta, 2004), Singapore Insomnia 48 (Singapore, 2004), Berlin Intransit Festival (Berlin, 2005), and The Morishita Studio (Tokyo, 2006). Naomi has involved in international collaborations such as Prism, a contemporary musical produced by Kageboushi Theatre Company, Tokyo (Japan and South East Asia, 2003); The Seven Spirit Banquet produced by PARC and Polynational Arts Carnival, Tokyo (Asia Pasific, 2004 and 2006); Di Cong Bak produced by Teater Garasi (Yogyakarta), Komunitas Tikar Pandan (Aceh) dan Theater Embassy (Amsterdam) in 2005; as well as Tony Prabowoâ€™s contemporary opera The Kingâ€™s Witch with Yudi Ahmad Tajudin, Goenawan Mohammad and The New York Julliard Ensemble (Jakarta, 2006). Naomi also writes fictions, two of her short stories were selected by the jury of Pena Kencana Literary Awards and were published in books titled 20 Cerpen Indonesia Terbaik 2008 and 20 Cerpen Indonesia Terbaik 2009 (Pena Kencana and Gramedia Pustaka Utama, 2009 and 2010). She is a member of Forum Penulis Lakon (Indonesian Playwrights Forum) and her play Perbuatan Serong has as well been published (FPL, Omah Sore, and Teater Garasi, 2011). Her adaptations include Shakuntala (2007), Medea Media (2010), and Goyang Penasaran she co-wrote with Intan Paramaditha (2011). She is too, a teacher/speaker and facilitator on trainings and workshops working with applied theater ideas. On television Naomi co-created the Kosmo talk shows she has been co-hosting with Risky Summerbee and aired by TVRI Jogja for nearly two years, discussing about contemporary arts, public space and cross-cultural issues.
