Visual Artist

Through experimentation in photography, video, and installation, I document and reconfigure the contemporary urban landscape, primarily at boundaries intersecting with nature. My interest in landscape stems from growing up near the swamp in New Orleans, studying in the rural Midwest; as well as traveling, studying and working in most of Central America and the Caribbean, Brazil, Croatia, Japan, and Eastern Europe. In 2002, I received a BA in Studio Art from the University of New Orleans, and in 2005, an MFA in Photography from Ohio University. Since then, I've participated in artist residencies at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (2005-2006), the Santa Fe Art Institute (2006), A Studio in the Woods (2007) and the Oregon College of Art & Craft (2010), and participated in Artist in the Marketplace #29 at the Bronx Museum (2008-2009). Recent projects have been exhibited throughout the US and internationally; including recent group exhibitions at the Bronx River Art Center, James Hotel, NYC, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Octavia Arts Gallery, New Orleans for Prospect 1.5; and Turning, a solo exhibition at Webster University Art Gallery in Leiden, the Netherlands (2011). Upcoming projects include Watershed for USSSA, the NY in BA festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and From Micro to Macro, a three-person exhibition at Cuchifritos in NYC.

For more, please visit: www.christyspeakman.com
