WE ARE…dynamic and experienced individuals ready to build bridges with the Bocas del Toro region, where the Naso and Afro-Panamanian People are fighting environmental injustices to maintain their quality of life as indigenous people. Through the Rainforest Awakenings program's holistic approach to environmental protection, meditation, trust building activities and the practice of council we will learn to protect nature and build community. We will share the solutions and community organizations skills we learned in Chicago and put into practice the skills we will learn in Panama when we return. We intend to document and share the struggle of the Panamanian people, the beauty of the land and our transformation as community leaders in order to raise awareness and continue global empowerment. Together we can defend our land.

AFTER WINTESSING… not only the struggle but also the power we have as a community we decided we couldn’t let this opportunity to support our Panamanian earth and community. We find their struggles, culture, and community too similar hold back from reaching out our hand. In Chicago one can see the difference in social and economic statuses change from one block to the next. In Little Village we witness that but also are immersed in the culture. The Little Village community is 83% Latino, half being 1st generation immigrants. We are part of that vibrant culture but we are also part of that great struggle. The poverty rate is 27% while Chicago’s overall rate is 20%. We are part of that every day struggle to support ourselves as well as our families, as daughters. We fight to keep our family and community strong. We, as supporters of P.E.R.R.O and LVEJO, have participated in the battles against two main environmental bullies. In Little Village and Pilsen, where we live, we were able to shut down the two of Chicago's biggest coal-fired power plants after 10 years of community protesting. http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=8562866 <http://lvejo.org/current-events/retire2plants>

WHAT WE NEED & WHAT YOU GET... We will be able to directly connect our local struggles with that of the Panamanian people and understand on a deeper level why the work we do is so important. We will be better informed about root causes of environmental destruction and experience a holistic approach to rainforest preservation. We will be empowered by knowledge and experience and better prepared to speak with other young people about real ways that we can continue to protect the planet. This will be the creation of an alternative model of how to support young leaders as they work to create a healthier planet.

SOCIAL IMPACT... The lives Chicago youth will change forever! They will reap the benefits of your generosity and concern for others. This will have a tremendous positive effect on their self-esteem and will also teach them how to build quality relationships with others and the global community.
