Artist Michael Barrett draws inspiration from his experience as a former U.S. Marine, cancer survivor, and college coach/athlete. Following the tradition of the San Francisco Art Institute, where he studied in the New Genres and History/Theory departments with Howard Fried, George Kuchar, & Hou Hanru, Michael negotiates situations in which his corporality and masculinity are pushed to extremes.

Barrett's work encompasses performance, video, installation, sculpture, photography, drawing, painting, sound, and writing. Through his practice, the body becomes a metaphor for larger social, political, and personal issues.

Michael has presented and performed in galleries, museums, universities and underground sites around the world and was recognized by the San Francisco Foundation as the recipient of the Murphy and Cadogan Fellowship in 2009. He has exhibited, among other locales, at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, Scope International in Basel, Switzerland, Surface Gallery, U.K., SOMArts in San Francisco, and at the Las Vegas Contemporary Arts Center.

Michael is currently in the process of curating his third event recognized and included in the Guinness Book of World Records.

website: http://artistmichaelbarrett.com
