Music in Common's mission is to
Music In Common, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to strengthen, empower, and educate communities through the universal language of music. By producing free, publicly accessible concerts, school programs, and multimedia productions with an interest in underserved areas and communities where there is a history of conflict, Music in Common (MiC) provides a platform for the exchange of ideas and collaborations that can lead to positive social change. Inspired by the life and in response to the tragic death of his friend and band mate Danny Pearl (the late Wall St. Journal reporter), musician, writer, and producer Todd Mack started MiC (then called FODfest) in 2005 as an informal backyard jam. Fueled by a resonating belief in music as a universal language, that backyard jam has grown into an internationally touring non-profit organization with innovative community-building programming that serves as a call to action in communities around the world. To date, MiC has toured to more than 100 communities across the US, Middle East, and Far East and operates multiple programs locally, nationally, and internationally. FODfest Community Concerts are free, open community music events that bring together diverse groups of artists and audiences, incorporating a unique performance format that is part concert, part song swap, and part jam session. A living demonstration of the power of music to connect people regardless of the differences between them, many of the participating musicians are meeting for the first time on stage. FODfest concerts are powerful and healing experiences, generating a sense of community and hope, often times serving as a call to action for individuals and communities to discover common ground. MiC Youth Programs are free educational programs that extend the FODfest concept of community building through music to youth, serving to educate, inspire, and empower junior high and high school students. MiC Youth Programs take place in local schools or community centers where FODfest concerts take place and provides an experiential education to students, teaching the essential life skills of team building, collaboration, and mutual respect. MiC Abroad are international tours, to date including the Middle East and Taiwan, that incorporate FODfest concerts, MiC Youth Programs, and MiC Multimedia Productions with a focus on underserved communities and areas with a history of conflict. In 2011, MiC will return to Israel and the West Bank. MiC Multimedia Productions broaden the reach of Music In Common programming to a worldwide community via the internet. Their message of tolerance and unity counters the exploitive use of multimedia and the internet to propagate hate and violence. Video clips can be viewed on our youtube channel. Future plans for the hours of video footage, audio recordings, and thousands of photos currently in the organization’s archives include a full-length documentary feature.
