Orlando Mendoza is a current undergraduate majoring in Biology (Pre-med). He is dynamic, charismatic, and a natural leader. He is ambitious in the best sense—he has goals much loftier than many would expect of a young man of his background. He is highly interested in public health and infectious diseases (HIV, Malaria, and MDRTB) in understanding the biological, social, political, and economic determinants of disease around the world. He initially became interested in global health through a course from Paul Farmer, and envisions working for the United Nations World Health Organization as a traveling doctor one day. He is both humbly and passionate about building a global community. Orlando resolves to meet each challenge with resilience, passion, and hard work. He shows great tenacity and ingenuity in overcoming the obstacles he has faced, they have broadened his perspective, and given him the confidence that he need to surpass whatever awaits him. Orlando would like to thoughtfully explore the challenges of implementing HIV treatment and prevention in rural areas of Africa, a topic on which he is sincerely intrigued by. The primary goals of Orlando’s endeavors are not personal gain, but service to others. Likely because of the many challenges Orlando faced as an adolescent, he has a holistic view of global poverty, and he easily grasps the interrelatedness of health disparities here in the United States and around the world. Orlando will let no obstacle come between him and his dreams.
