Claudia Norman

Jackson Heights, New York, United States

Claudia Norman is the force behind some of the biggest cultural events in the biggest city in the U.S. As the founder of CN Management, a cultural consulting and management agency in New York City, Norman has reigned over high-profile performances from Lincoln Center's "La Casita" tour to Chavela Vargas' concert at Carnegie Hall. In 2004, Norman launched her own citywide festival, Celebrate Mexico Now, which will take over NYC once again this November. With a dedication to global understanding through the arts, this mexicana's unfailing vision is second only to her unflagging passion.

"I was born and raised in Mexico City. My father was an opera singer and my mom was an anthropologist and museographer. I grew up with my father being on stage and my mother doing research on culture and social changes. What I'm doing right now is a combination of both.

After finishing my B.A. [at Universidad National Autonoma de Mexico] in Latin American studies, I moved to New York. After doing research on immigration for a while, I decided to go back to school. I went to New York University and found an arts administration program that connected the arts with social issues. I had the opportunity to find a mentor, Sheldon Soffer, and I produced one of his concerts at Lincoln Center.

My first professional experience was working with Ravi Shankar, Netherlands Dance Theatre, and Pilobolus, booking their U.S. tours. I was always concerned with the lack of Latin American artists in the States. But just because I'm Mexican doesn't mean I'm just interested in Latin American culture. I'm interested in learning about Chinese opera. I'm willing to learn Irish folkloric dances! This is another way to understand a new culture and find the similarities to your own."
