My name is Fontessa de Ridder, studying to become a writer/ director (MFA). Having received a Bachelor in Journalism (2001) from the School of Journalism in Utrecht, The Netherlands, I’ve learned how to handle hard facts: how to research, develop and produce them. As time went by, I discovered that news wasn’t my true passion though. I started editing and producing talk shows, drama, showbiz and action shows, nationally and internationally, but realized after five years, that I was actually a very talented director.

In 2006 I started working for Kanakna Productions where I got the chance to combine two of my biggest dreams: directing abroad. Brazil, Jamaica, Thailand, the US and Australia were some of the countries I worked at alone or with crews consisting of more than a hundred people. On the set, I instinctively knew what decisions to make, how to motivate the cast and how to organize my time. In the editing room, I developed a refined sense of drama, combined with a sharp aesthetic eye.

While filming and editing 50 minutes episodes, I never forgot my passion for writing though. I knew I wanted more. At the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, I’ve found the perfect combination of writing and directing my own ‘fictive’ movies. I’ve learned all about the technical aspects of film, such as shutter speed, f-stops, lights and sound, but I find story elements even more intriguing.

I’ve always done what other people consider to be out of the ordinary and my goal is to include that in my movies. The topics I choose are controversial, cheeky, but that’s typically me. I want to show the world what happens around them, but what they’re not aware off. And that’s exactly what differentiates me from my fellow directors. I won’t distract the storyline with stunning visual effects; I want the content to blow people away. Great cinematography is essential, but not crucial. That’s my Journalism background stepping in: fictive stories about hard facts.
