I was born and raised in a hamlet on the Bering Sea coast of Kamchatka, USSR. After immigrating to the USA in 1988, I eventually earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Biology from Columbia University. For over two decades, I have been working with Indigenous peoples around the world on traditional knowledge, resilience, sacred sites and climate change. I have written about these issues for National Geographic, Cultural Survival, Wildlife Conservation, and other publications.
