American Indian Art Therapy

<p><span>Elizabeth Warson, PhD, ATR-BC, LPC, NCC, is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate Art Therapy Program at George Washington University. She is presently on the Board of Directors for the Society for the Arts in Healthcare and serves as the co-chair for the Society&rsquo;s research committee. As a clinician, she has 17 years of post-graduate experience in a variety of settings, including medical hospitals, dialysis centers, residential treatment centers, correctional facilities, and private practice. Her research interests focus on stress and pain reduction interventions for American Indians cancer survivors and their family members. She is the recipient of a Johnson and Johnson grant, co-sponsored by the Mayo Cancer Clinic's Spirit of EAGLES program, for her</span><em>Healing Pathways: Art for Survivors</em><span>&nbsp;program. Her dissertation study,</span><em>Art-Based Narrative Inquiry with American Indian Cancer Survivors</em><span>&nbsp;was funded by the Barbara Rosenblum Scholarship for the Study of Women and Breast Cancer. Her current research project, involving an efficacy study of art-based stress reduction interventions for American Indian cancer survivors, is currently being funded through the Mayo Cancer Clinic&rsquo;s Spirit of EAGLES community grant program and a young investigator&rsquo;s award through the American Cancer Society. She is also a recipient of a 2010 National Endowment for the Arts grant (folk and traditional art) for her community-drive Coharie Heritage Empowerment Project. Her interest in American Indian holistic healing practices led to a newly funded project&nbsp;</span><em>Healing Pathways: American Indian Medicine and Art Therapy&nbsp;</em><span>(GW University Facility Funds Award). &nbsp;Elizabeth received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1989 and an M.A. in Art Therapy from Vermont College of Norwich University in 1993. She completed her Ph.D. studies in Interdisciplinary Studies at Colorado State University in 2008. Elizabeth has presented at regional and national American Indian and Alaska Native conferences on topics related to medical art therapy, stress and pain reduction interventions, culturally-responsive art therapy, visual journaling interventions, and narrative-based art therapy. Her publications comprise peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters in books. As a professional artist, she has exhibited her sculptural work nationally and internationally and is a recipient of an Ohio Arts Council fellowship award.</span></p>
