Producer/Director

Monica Virtue was born in Woodstock, Ontario, and graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University's Communication Studies program ('99) before volunteering as a reporter and camera operator for Rogers Television. After falling in love with the camera, Monica returned to school to attend Sheridan College's Advanced TV & Film program. She received her post-diploma in 2003, and then returned to Sheridan to take part in the school's incubator program to direct a documentary on the personal aftermath of the Ipperwash crisis. In 2005, with the Ipperwash Inquiry recommendations yet to be released and her film still in production, she was approached by Sam George and his lawyer, Murray Klippenstein, to direct a documentary about the history of the Ipperwash Provincial Park lands - the site of the controversial police-shooting of Sam's brother, First Nations protester Dudley George. Since starting work on the historical documentary in 2005, Monica has also directed Freedom Drum ('07), a short documentary on Indigenous rights that was commissioned by Amnesty International Canada. Today, after spending several years deep in research, Monica continues work on Ipperwash Park. She has also been a guest speaker at Lakehead University and York University's Osgoode Hall on the topics of First Nations assimilation and land surrenders.
