Percussion Performance, Composition, and Education

I am a third generation drummer from the Cleveland, OH area who relocated to Texas in February of 2012. While in Cleveland, I received my Bachelor of Music Degree in Percussion Performance from Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory. It was here that I was able to perform in the BW Percussion Ensemble, the BW Symphony Orchestra, BW Jazz Ensemble, BW Jazz Combo, and “1)a”, the BW Contemporary Music Ensemble. I also performed in numerous student recitals, both with my peers and as a soloist. During this time, I was able to play drums and percussion professionally for the Beck Center for the Arts (Lakewood, OH), the Players Guild Theatre (Canton, OH), and Kent State University. I also played professionally in countless local bands, where I was able to tour as far west as Idaho, as far south as Georgia, and as far east as New York. I have had the honor to share the stage with many inspiring musicians, including Valerie Naranjo of the Saturday Night Live Band, composer Krzysztof Penderecki (Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining), Pat Benatar, and saxophonist Greg Banaszak, to name a few.

As a professional drum set player, I have performed styles ranging from heavy rock to jazz to avant-garde solo pieces. As a professional percussionist, I have performed styles ranging from classical percussion to minimalism. I am well versed in percussion ensemble repertoire as well as solo percussion repertoire (mallets, multi-percussion, etc.). In the last two years, I have written and performed original solo percussion music, most of which combines electronic music idioms with classical percussion, all revolving around modern drum set styles

Upon graduating with my Bachelor of Music Degree, I relocated to the Orlando, FL area to pursue my Master of Science in Entertainment Business. It was here that I was able to complete a business plan for a modern record label. During this time, I was able to perform locally as well as write and produce music. Upon graduation, I relocated back to Cleveland, OH where I implemented my business plan and was able to sell and produce music as well as book shows and short tours.

My seven-year teaching experience is as diverse as my ten-year playing experience. I have taught private drum and percussion lessons at Baldwin-Wallace, the Aurora School of Music, and, most recently, the Cleveland School of Rock. I have taught music theory and music history as well as musical form and genre studies. I have percussion ensemble conducting and coaching experience, both in small and large groups. I have taught students ranging from five years of age to adults. I have taught ability levels ranging from beginners to advanced/college players. My teaching experience also includes teaching reading and comprehension skills to rural and inner-city youths.

As a teacher, I am a lifelong learner, having studied drums and percussion with Josh Ryan, Jim Wall (Big Brother and the Holding Company), Valerie Naranjo (SNL Band), and Dave Hershey (Logan Wells’ Patsy Cline Revue). My teaching is always inspired with the aim of inspiring my students and preparing them for lifelong learning. For me, music is a vehicle in which to live an enriching, meaningful life, and having the opportunity to show that to my students is an honor and a privilege. The truest application of all knowledge and wisdom is the ability to educate others.

For more information and music, visit www.JoeyScaleMusic.com or find me on Facebook at facebook.com/JoeyScaleMusic.
