Richard Grossman

Los Angeles, California, United States

Richard’s interest in PTSD is personal. After going through a severe accident at a very young age, he directly experienced the long term and nearly intractable effects of PTSD. This led to deep interest in healing that started quite early in his life.
The use of plants as a path to healing also started when he was quite young. In primary school, he was given the classic “what do you want to be when you grow-up assignment. To the surprise of his teacher, his answer was that he “wanted to study the effect of plants on the mind”.

Starting in his teenage years, Richard explored various forms of spiritual teachings and healing arts. He studied Asian philosophy, martial arts, massage, macrobiotics, juice fasting, yoga, aikido and herbal medicines. This search had its first culmination in 1979 when he began a deep study of Asian Medicine in Los Angeles. Three years later, he was one of three students from his school to attend post-graduate acupuncture training in Beijing, in the People’s Republic of China.

Upon his return to the U.S., he began a thriving private practice and continued his studies, earning a Master’s in Acupuncture, a Doctor of Oriental Medicine degree, a Ph.D. in Oriental Medicine, a Diplomat in Acupuncture, a Diplomat of Pain Management, and a Diplomat in Acupuncture Orthopedics.

In the mid 1980’s Dr. Grossman was introduced to the Amazonian medicine Ayahuasca. This started another chapter in his life that led to him spending a great deal of time in the jungle studying with indigenous healers. There he experienced (and saw in many others) the deep healing that survivors of severe trauma often have with Ayahuasca. This was the seed that led to his desire to create this documentary.
