Making Rabbinic Art!

Hi, I'm Bronwen!

In 2006 I graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a BA in Theater and Music. I was working as a composer for various lyricists around the city. I aspired to write my own musicals that would explore themes I found most relevant (war and casualties, the environment, the economy); provocative (sex and gender); heart-wrenching (families, love, power struggles and vulnerability); and also redemptive (sacrifice, community, and spirituality). I wanted to work with artists across disciplines: dancers, actors, painters, sculptors, musicians, video-artists, puppeteers, animators. I wanted to work across genres: installation, performance art, toy theater; and utilize a wealth of methodologies: collaborative devising, improvisation, starting from newspaper articles, staring from found objects, sometimes even just from a script! My dream was to make theater unbound by rules or restrictions or expectations, where the learning process was just as important as the product, and the ties that bind one artist to another are not just defined by terms of a contract, but by trust, admiration, and fellowship.

Now in 2012, I'm a 2nd year Rabbinical Student at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Before that I was a 3-year Arts Fellow at the Drisha Institute for Jewish Education. Through that program I was able to fuse two very disparate parts of my identity: my Judaism and my creativity. I refer to myself as a Rabbinic Artist, though some more familiar with Hebrew might like to call me a "Midrashist".

I am also the co-founder (with performance artist/director Jesse Freedman and choreographer/dancer Sydney Schiff) of an amazing new theater company, Meta-Phys Ed. We are here to make provocative Jewish art that comes from our hearts, from our experiences, our struggles, our points of connection, and of course, from the texts themselves. It is with these great artists that I feel creatively, emotionally and spiritually fulfilled. I feel very grateful to be a part of this project.

I'm excited to be on indiegogo and to share my projects and dreams with you all, as well as to learn about yours and support as many as I can.

Success, health and happiness!

;) bronwen
