Art That Moves The World

Charter Oak Cultural Center harnesses the power of the arts to create positive social change. Our programming falls into two main categories. We provide both out-of-school time arts offerings for young people, and professional multi-cultural arts performances and exhibits.

Our Youth Arts Institute serves over 1,000 of Hartford’s inner-city children, ages 4 through 18, with completely free before-school, during-school, after-school, weekend and summer arts and literacy-based programming and provides students with free nutritious meals and snacks. We are one of the only organizations in Hartford that provides consistent non-audition-based out-of-school time arts offerings to young people, completely free of charge. Our youth programming focuses on how the arts relate to academic subjects such as reading, writing, science and math and a recent study demonstrated that integration of the arts with these areas can help raise student achievement levels. Our assessments show that our Youth Arts Institute successfully does just that and, this year, the program was just selected as a finalist by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, distinguishing it as one of the top arts and humanities-based youth programs in the country.

Charter Oak also hosts cutting-edge, thought-provoking visual and performing arts, including dance, theater, film, concerts, readings, lectures and gallery exhibits—all housed in a beautiful historic landmark building that served as Connecticut’s first synagogue. Although we take pride in the history of our building, our organization has no religious affiliation and our programming seeks to build awareness and appreciation of all the world’s cultures—to explore and celebrate, through the common language of the arts, the differences that make each of us unique, and also to discover our great similarities. Our overall goal is to provide access to the arts to all who hunger for them. As a matter of policy, we offer as many of our professional performances and events as we can for free, keep our prices as low as possible and never turn anyone away who cannot afford the price of a ticket.

Our mission statement is as follows: Charter Oak Cultural Center, a beautiful historic landmark and vibrant arts center, contributes to the revitalization of Hartford by bringing the community together through open and equal access to the arts, with a deep commitment to social justice.
