building a creative space for the community

Skwhirlhaus is the dream (and soon reality!) of Maryn Whitmore. A native of Atlanta GA, Maryn is a choreographer, movement artist, dance educator, Pilates instructor and mom. Maryn grew up in a creative family and was always encouraged to think outside the box and celebrate individuality. She learned to value her imagination early in life. Maryn’s love for creating dance began at a very young age. This love eventually brought her to the University of Georgia where she earned a degree in Dance in 2001 with an emphasis in choreography and performance.

While at the university she trained and performed with CORE Concert Dance Company under the direction of Bala Sarasvati with whom she credits as a creative mentor. This afforded her the opportunity to work with Molissa Fenley, Kent DeSpain, Matt Kent and Janet Robertson, all influential people on her journey. Her choreographic studies at UGA focused on avant-garde, interdisciplinary performance with influences based in sound, color, light and humor. Upon graduation she developed Three Rings, a project that brought contemporary dance and performance to non-traditional spaces in and around the Atlanta area.

Eager to take her ideas to a different level, Maryn began touring the United States with Divided Like a Saint’s and Abracachupacabra as a violinist, vocalist and performance artist. From 2001 to 2009, Maryn lived on and off the road in a converted school bus, making a living as a performing artist on the cusp of the DIY culture. Performing at Rhinoceropolis in Denver, CO, SS Marie Antoinette in Seattle, WA, Lemp Neighborhood Arts in St. Louis, MO, Il Corral in Los Angeles, CA, and The Secret Squirrel in Athens, GA, among other venues, Maryn shaped her belief in community, collaboration and unique presentation.

As a student of movement and the body, Maryn earned her 600-hour certification in the Pilates Method of Body Conditioning under the tutelage of Penelope Wyer-Barrow in 2002. As a teacher, Maryn helps guide her students through movement to discover the body’s capacity and the true connectivity of the mind, body and spirit. Maryn’s belief in the body’s ability to heal from within is a theme throughout her teaching.

Currently, Maryn lives and works in Atlanta, GA with her husband Matt, raising their daughter Naomi Wryn, teaching dance and Pilates and developing Tiny Neighbors. She enjoys spending time with her family in the vegetable garden and playing with Rex and Andie the dogs.
