I'm a certified teacher in Texas in special education that was laid off last year because of the reduction in force thanks to the budget cuts... Was probably a blessing because I became pregnant with my fourth (and final) little boy - and wound up delivering him seven weeks early. We spent a month in the NICU but thankfully he's doing well now.

My two oldest, Quest (13) and Elyjah "Zak" (8) both have HCM. Quest is minimally thick but Zak is severe. He's starting to experience heart failure symptoms.

Let me tell you how different life is with children who have a major heart disease. When you send your child off to their room, I bet it doesn't occur to you that they may suffer from cardiac arrest out of sight and need your help, right? I frequently call for Zak to make sure he's doing ok when he's playing on his computer... I don't let him go anywhere alone. He doesn't go to school because of his heart condition and he's unable to participate in any sports. We carry an AED around with us now because of the potential for cardiac arrest - the boys refer to this as their "shocker."

Life is different, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. It's just a matter of finding the positives in the little things. :)
