From Soldier to Teacher to Filmmaker

I served as a tank driver in the U.S. Army in Korea and Kansas between 1995 and 1997. While at Ft. Riley, KS, I served for one week as part of a funeral detail and it was one of the most interesting experiences of my life.

After the Army, I went to college and graduated from California State University, Chico with a degree in English and two years later with a Masters Degree in English Literature.

In 2004, I moved to Taiwan where I spent three years as an English Teacher and two years teaching beginning film production to some high school students. In 2008, I moved to Turkey where I spent two years doing similar work at the University Level. One of my students and I founded a website to showcase the films of the high school and college students we worked with.

In 2010, I moved to Salt Lake City, UT to attend the University of Utah's Department of Film and Media Studies. Amid theory and production courses and teaching Beginning Film Production, I have worked closely with my instructors on developing a meaningful thesis project.

"The Funeral Detail" came out of a conversation between me and one of my professors. We talked about the connection between death and humor and the kind of gallows humor I witnessed while on funeral detail all those years ago. I look forward to telling the truth with this film and to writing and directing many more films in the future.
