For Town Board of the Town of New Windsor.

BONNIE C. BRENNAN was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1958. She spent most of her childhood in Missouri and her teenage years in Utah where she learned to love to ski downhill during the winters and camp and hike in the mountains during the summers.

Bonnie entered the University of Utah when she was 16 years of age. She majored in political science and philosophy. She completed her Bachelor’s degree when she was 19 years of age, graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After receiving the Mary Pillsbury-Lord Fellowship, she began her graduate studies at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, shortly thereafter. Her fields at The Fletcher School included Communist Area Studies, International Trade and Commercial Policies, International Law and Security Studies (with a concentration on low level violence).

Ultimately, Bonnie earned both her Master’s Degree and her Ph.D. from The Fletcher School. In the interim, she made a short stop at New York University School of Law where she earned her law degree. When she received NYU’s Jacob Blaustein Fellowship in Human Rights, she decided to make human rights advocacy the centerpiece of her professional career. She continued to pursue her profound commitment to human rights when she wrote her dissertation on international minority rights in partial fulfillment of the requirements of her Fletcher Ph.D.

Bonnie has worked at The Legal Aid Society in New York City as Associate Appellate Counsel for the past 22 years. Defending the due process rights of the criminally accused constitutes human rights in action. She is dedicated to her clients and proud of her work with the Society. She is also an Adjunct Professor at the New York University Department of Politics where she teaches graduate seminars on minority rights, human rights and humanitarian law. Finally, Bonnie currently serves on the Committee on Military Affairs and Justice of the New York City Bar Association.

Bonnie married her husband, Lei Song, in 2006. They purchased a home in New Windsor where they have lived for the past six years with their beloved cats. She is thrilled to have finally planted roots in a community that she can call home. She continues to love the outdoors and, spent a great deal of time gardening this summer. She and her husband enjoy swimming in the nearby Beaver Dam Lake and hiking in the numerous parks in the area with their amazingly smart and astonishingly brave standard poodle, Paul.
