Like it or not, Lainie Towell has become the poster girl for the issue of marriage fraud in Canada. She has been credited for motivating the government to tighten Canadian laws around marriages of convenience -- and she did it by using art as a vehicle for communicating with the media and government about her personal story. Lainie's story garnered international media attention and was featured in countless news programs when she marched to Parliament Hill wearing a wedding dress, with a red door strapped to her back. She has also been featured in two documentary film projects, including Interfilm Production "True Love or Marriage Fraud", for CBC the Passionate Eye. Lainie holds a degree in Art History from Carleton University, and is known in her hometown mostly for her work in contemporary African dance. She is the recipient of several dance grants and one inter-arts grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. She is also co-curator for Ottawa's first Nuit Blanche.
