Young Woman Coming of Age in Recession Era LA
<p>Writer and director Najaa Young originally hails from Cleveland, OH but attended high school and college in Pittsburgh, PA. A bashful and introverted child, it was in high school that Najaa broke out of her shell and began performing with her mother’s African dance company, Omi Tutu. Since then she has performed with various West African and Afro-Caribbean dance companies as a member and as a guest artist most notably, African Soul International, Olokumi African Arts Collective and Tam Tam Magic directed by Senegalese master drummer, Assane M’Baye. Najaa has a <span class="caps">MFA</span> in Film Production from Florida State University’s Graduate Conservatory of Motion Picture, Television and Recording Arts and a BA in Theatre Arts from Chatham College. Her graduate thesis film, Coochie, which she wrote and directed, has appeared in numerous film festivals worldwide including, Los Angeles International Short Film Festival, Nashville Film Festival, Pensacola Bay International Film Festival and the Pan African Film Festivals of Los Angeles, Atlanta and Denver (where it also won the Best Student Film Award). In addition, Najaa has written and directed productions for Karamu House Theatre Outreach Performance Series, Cleveland Public Theatre’s Big [Box], a festival of new works, and Cuyahoga Community College’s Dance Department. She currently resides in Los Angeles, CA where she writes, directs and teaches.</p>
