Our Mission:

Bending Threads is an innovative collective consisting of four artists in pursuit of a new vision for cabaret. Through live musical performance themed with African-American literature we create an atmosphere to entertain, educate and inspire audiences.

OUR STORY: The History of Bending Threads

After a well-known Broadway producer commented on the lack of a resource pool of talented African-American performers in NYC, Mr. Rejinald Woods considered the comment and acted on an opportunity. On a quest to challenge this statement through positive artistic expression, he gathered together his peers of multi-talented artists to self-produce a cabaret show. In March 2009, Patrice Bell, Kareen Foster, Westley Todd Holiday and Rejinald Woods came together and created Bending Threads. Bending Threads became a platform for eager artists to give birth to their own means of self-expression.

Premiering at Don’t Tell Mama Cabaret Night Club on April 28, 2009, Bending Threads produced and performed their Paul Lawrence Dunbar inspired cabaret piece, We Wear the Mask. The overwhelming response to this first show propelled a new vision for the four artists. From this point, they advanced their dream of self-employment and promotion instead of relying on producers to cast them in theatrical shows.

Their achievement with We Wear The Mask, was followed by Seasons of Change premiering in November of 2009, at The Duplex. Looking to gain more exposure in the cabaret scene while celebrating Cabaret Month, Bending Threads toured New York City with both shows in March 2010. Seasons of Change returned to the Duplex and a revised version of We Wear the Mask premiered at the Metropolitan Room. In a little over a year into their development, this new team of artists brought additional performances to the Iguana Nightclub, Broadway Comedy Club, and the 2010 MetroStar competition at the Metropolitan Room. Bending Threads actively believes in building a cohesive community of artists and have since created two show series: BT & Friends and Black on Broadway in which they invite other professional peers and Broadway veterans to share the stage.

After the challenge and success of two shows and several performances, Bending Threads had built a diverse and loyal audience and expanded their presence in the Cabaret community. The next step was a leap towards making history; DREAMSCAPE. This three night cabaret-style mini series celebrated the two year anniversary of Bending Threads and was the first ever series of its kind to hit the New York stage.
