Carmen Hulbert
Brooklyn, New York, United States
A New York-based journalist becomes a filmmaker to tell heartfelt stories of a violent period in her country, Peru.
Carmen Valdivieso Hulbert was born to a political activist family during a military dictatorship in Peru in the early 50s. Her education, first in an English school and later with Franciscan nuns, created a yearning for life abroad, mixed with the need to help people of lesser means. She spent her senior year in the US, in 1968. It was during the Vietnam-era she became aware of social issues, further shaped by her college years and working as journalist under a military regime in the 70s.
