massage therapist and soon-to-be yoga teacher

I didn't know chronic pain was going to be the focus of my massage therapy practice when I started. I knew back in 1999 how important stress relief was, but I didn't know what chronic stress could turn into back then. I was just a kid trying to figure out why I wanted to help people and how I could do it best. I wanted to be a doctor, but after massage school that all changed. To work with someone, to help them feel even a little better affects me deeply. It's profound how pain changes our lives. How it can render us powerless or make us stronger than we ever thought we could be. I have seen and experienced so many levels of pain and I just want to help others. I want to empower people to get better, to get the support they need, to feel stronger, to believe they can heal.

I have been practicing massage therapy for over 11 years. I am currently working on a master's degree to explore chronic pain and trauma. I hope, with your support, that I will be able to expand my business to include a chronic pain clinic that provides insurance billing and sliding fee scales so individuals in pain can get the relief and support they need. There are many facets to chronic pain--the physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual-- all interplay in the individual experience.

My plan is to create an environment where patients are supported, where they get the help they need either through support through the treatments provided by me and my staff, or through referrals, and through joint efforts between me and your health care team. This is about being proactive. It's about having someone in the patient's corner to help them heal. Suffering from chronic pain is often more challenging than other diseases or disorders because people can't see what patients are going through, they don't understand the depths of the pain and how it affects their life, their thinking, their sleeping, their concentration, their ability to learn, etc. People suffering from chronic pain need an advocate, a teacher, someone who can help them on many levels.
