Short Summary

Hello, I’m Benjamin Stroman, director and creator of A Crucible, an original adaptation of Arthur Miller’s classic American drama. After months of preparation, I’m thrilled to present this piece November 3-5 at Bard College, in upstate New York.

Last fall, as a student, I designed and led a course at Bard which introduced students to the theatrical practices of visionaries like Antonin Artaud and Jerzy Grotowski, as well as the innovative styles of directors such as Pina Bausch, Dimitris Papaioannou, and Romeo Castellucci. Simultaneously, I was also delving into Nietzsche’s aesthetic philosophy and discovered profound connections between his theories, Miller’s play, and Euripides’s The Bacchae.

I am thrilled to bring to life this piece which I feel is at once an original look at the deep spiritual and primal roots of this play, as well as a commitment to a new theatrical language which I have been fortunate enough to develop with my close collaborator Austen Bohmer.

“A Crucible” is a very personal exploration of the clash between the Dionysian artistic impulse when met with a Christian dispensation. It is an examination of identity, judgment, shame, and personal freedom. In delving into these themes, our theater prioritizes the senses, embracing a language that transcends rational or political certainty, catering instead to the carnal and somatic unconscious. Rather than presenting a fixed interpretation, our theatre is one which aims to pry open and make more complex the plays themes.

Each day I work with the incredible artists who have joined me in this project, I find myself deeply moved by this piece that we are building together. It is an honor to be in dialogue with Miller’s brilliant writing, to be in communion with fellow artists, and soon, to invite a spectator to witness what we have made. I would be deeply grateful, as well, for your help in this endeavor. Your support is vital for us to make this happen.

What We Need

Our budget is comprised of four categories:

  • Travel & Accommodation for Artists (Total: $4,350)
  • Lighting & Set (Total: $1,850)
  • Wardrobe (Total: $850)
  • Advertising & Videography (Total: $450)

Our first priority is providing travel, accommodation, and food for our artists. If we do not meet our goal of $7,500, your donations will first and foremost be used to meet this need.

The Impact

Your support for "A Crucible" is so much larger than this single project. By contributing, you are helping to ensure that we can continue to develop this unique theatrical language. Ours is a mission to vitalize the American theater by sincerely engaging with the sensorial roots of this art form. Thank you for helping us in this endeavor one project at a time.
