Thank you all for your support and solidarity! We try hard to overreach our initial goal, since more and more people from all over the world have shown interest to be a part of A Flight For Democracy. We now have a long waiting list and hope that we can help as many of us as possible!
We
are 60+ members and friends of the Greek left party SYRIZA. Most
of us are students and low-income employees. We
organize this fund-raise in order to help each and every one of us to
buy an airplane ticket, so that we can vote at the upcoming Greek
National Elections on January 25th. Unfortunately, Greek citizens who live abroad can not vote at their embassies and they have to be in Greece that day in order to vote.
To make a long story short, four
years have passed since the first Memorandum between IMF, ECB, the EU
and Greece. Severe cuts on the welfare state, 40% income loss for the
citizens and an unemployment rate of 30% (youth 60%) are only some of
the calculable results of the implemented measures. In order to
sustain support from an increasingly impoverished people, a series of
governments since 2010 has supported a narrative about the
implausibility of escaping austerity that undercuts almost all
aspects of civic and private life. The spirit of austerity now
haunts all of Europe, proving that the "Greek peculiarity"
was after all no peculiarity at all.
During
these four years Greece has also experienced the
rise of the left. Syriza has convinced more and more people of the
plausibility of a different way out of the crisis. This seeks to
dispense with the burden placed on the Greek people in just terms. We
see the upcoming elections in Greece as an important opportunity not just for our
country but also for the rest of Europe. A government of the left will shake
things up in Greece and Europe as a whole, and it will act as an instigator for
more anti-austerity voices to rise. This movement will cause Europe
to remember its own forgotten values of justice and democracy. Help
us be a part of this historic moment, by making yourselves a part
