In A Nutshell…
From Fawn Cove Productions and Akono Productions, “A Hotel Bar in the Desert” is a story about the push and pull between family and dreams, homes old and new, and the decisions made when you have to make a choice that will change your future.
After his sickly mother is hospitalized, Miles decides to abandon Los Angeles and his dreams of becoming an actor to go home and take care of her. While staying a hotel in the Southwest, he runs into an aspiring actress, Caroline, who’s on her way to California to try and fulfill her dream.
The Production
“A Hotel Bar in the Desert" will be shooting in late February/early March, 2019, in Santa Clarita and Twentynine Palms, California. After all is said and done, the film will be tight and economical, with an estimated length of 10 to 12 minutes.
We are assembling a talented cast and crew from across the nation. Some of our team members include Michael Woods (Writer/Director/Co-Producer), Akono Dixon (“Miles”/Co-Producer), Amanda Camacho (“Caroline”), and Matt Hoge (Director of Photography).
Funding
The funding we are asking for will be going to many different aspects of the process, mostly to rental costs of production. Production is planned to take place over two and a half days.
To break down the funding specifically, and what the money will go to…
We will need to rent a camera package ($398), a lens set ($110), sound equipment ($100), and various other items, such as a video monitor ($30) and a light kit ($42), in order to physically film and record sound on the set.
In addition, we will also need to secure funding for the various locations that we will need to use, most importantly the bar itself but also hotel rooms and various exteriors ($1,200).
To finish up the process, we will need a certain amount to edit the film with professional coloring and audio mixing, plus a marketing plan that covers film festival submission fees ($1,000).
While these are the main needs, we will also need to cover various on-set expenses, such as paying for craft services and lunch/dinner for the cast and crew ($500).
These specific items, as well as others, all add up to a total budget of $4,500.
The Impact
This film is very personal to the whole cast and crew, as it is about those of us who have come to Los Angeles from other places in order to chase our dreams.
In a way, Miles and Caroline are on the same path, but at two different points. This story is about what happens when two people can remind each other about what came before and what might be coming soon, and how the two can help each other get through both points.
We hope the film will be seen not only by others who are here, in similar positions to the characters, but also those who have ambitions of any kind, who are trying to move up but must face obstacles along the way.
