A Play About Wall Street for the Kids of New York
Andrea Navedo is known to audiences as Xo, Jane's loving mom on the hit CW show "Jane the Virgin." Navedo, a veteran TV and theater actress, got her start as a student at The Acting Studio, the training school for the Chelsea Repertory Company. The Studio specializes in the Meisner Technique, an acting approach created by Sanford Meisner that emphasizes the "reality of doing."
Navedo has decided to pay forward the success of "Jane" and return to the Studio to produce and star in "Other People's Money," Jerry Sterner's portrait of the last days of a dying industry and the Wall Street raider who cashes in. Although it depicts late 1980s Wall Street, the play's themes of income inequality, joblessness and "Golden Parachutes" for executives resonate today. The play will run at the Chelsea Repertory Company theater in Manhattan from July 29 to August 14.
Combining two of Navedo's passions—and with dollar-for-dollar matching funds—50 percent of the money raised in this campaign will be go toward covering the costs of the plays' production, and the other 50 percent will go to the Fresh Air Fund. Since 1877, the Fresh Air Fund has been sending kids from low-income households to summer camps and homestays. The Fund allowed Navedo, who went away to summer camp when she was 12-years-old, the opportunity to enjoy time camping, swimming and getting a break from the South Bronx. It's an experience that she would like more children to have.
Your contribution will help the Fresh Air Fund continue to provide life-changing experiences for children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to travel or spend time in the great outdoors. Even as a successful actress, her summer away remains a milestone for Navedo.
What We Need & What You Get
The goal for this campaign is $7,800. A generous private donor has pledged to match donations up to that amount. That means everything you give is doubled! We arrived at $7,800 because that is the budget for the production.
Where does the money go? To two places--the production of the play and the Fresh Air Fund. If we exceed our goal, all pledges over $7,800 will go to the Fund.
On the production side, donations will finance theater rentals, costumes, set design, props, and promotional materials. Donations will also pay the dedicated designers, directors and actors in the production.
The rest of the money will go to the Fresh Air Fund to provide summer vacations to kids that really need them.
In the case that we do not meet our goal, whatever we have collected will still be divided 50/50 between the production and the Fund.
Now, what do you get? Amazing things! Want to follow Navedo's august footsteps into acting? How about an introduction Meisner Technique at The Acting Studio? For fans of the "Jane" ensemble, your top donation can nab you ticket's to see "Chicago" on Broadway where Jaime Camil--Jane's dad, Rogelio, on the show--stars as Billy Flynn. Other perks include one-of-a-kind "Jane" swag and a chance to mingle with actors and Navedo herself at an opening night meet and greet.
