Our Story
Selvage Media is a social media production company, and we're asking for your help.
The word ‘selvage’ refers to the self-finished
edges of fabric – it keeps the fabric from unraveling or fraying. This is
exactly what we do for our clients. For nearly two years, we have worked with
businesses, nonprofits and political candidates around the world, creating and executing social media
strategies that prevent our clients’ stories from unraveling.
While business is good, we've recently
found a higher calling - and we need your financial support to bring it to life. There is an
urgent need for an open and honest conversation with teens, parents and
teachers about responsible social media use. That's why we're going to self-fund a
program we're calling Above the Fray, aimed at teaching safe and responsible social media use. Far too many of our youth are on social media
without proper education or oversight.

Millions of teens are
facing daily struggles, including:
- Body Image
- Predators
- Sexting
- Inappropriate Posts
- Cyberbullying
This is an epidemic, and we are passionate about creating a real solution. It starts with open, honest conversation.
We've engaged parents, teachers and school district partners. Everyone agrees, a program like Above The Fray is desperately needed. With your financial help, we will be able to begin immediately.
What We Need & What You Get
We need to build Selvage Media to a point of sustainability, so we can effectively self-fund the Above The Fray program. This means we need to expand, hiring the right staff. Your donations will help us reach a point of critical mass, allowing our founder to shift a considerable amount of time and resources to Above The Fray.
We're aiming for $25,000. This money will allow us to expand Selvage Media, and get Above The Fray off the ground and into classrooms.
No contribution is too small. Every dollar we raise will help us create a program that has the potential to positively affect millions of young people.
And, yes, we're offering incentives. From wristbands to shirts and even on-site social media consulting, we have levels suited to all budgets. Like we said, no amount is too small. And no amount is too large.
The Impact
We can change the world. All of us, acting together, can alter the course of history. We know this sounds lofty, but it's true. We stand at a critical juncture in time. This is a unique moment in history. There is a massive problem impacting the lives of youth across the world. Let's take the first step towards doing something about it.
Other Ways You Can Help
Even if you have no money to support Above The Fray, you have more power than you may realize. If you can't afford to contribute money to this campaign, we ask that you take a few seconds of your time to share our story with your friends, family, coworkers, etc. Post this on Facebook. Tweet it. Pin it. Help us get it out there.

What's Next?
For the next few months, we'll be listening. During phase one of Above The Fray, our team will be meeting frequently with a diverse group of young people, rolling up our sleeves and learning what it’s truly like for them in the social media trenches. In these focus groups, we're going to get first-hand accounts of social media use and abuse, identify core issues, and learn about the distinct nuances of each social media platform.
In phase two of Above The Fray, we’ll spend the spring months creating relateable and tangible curriculum based on this fact-finding mission. We're going to meet these issues head-on, addressing them candidly from the perspectives of students, parents and teachers.
Phase three is the online and in-person launch of our program. We will be sharing Above The Fray before the 2013-2014 school session ends.
To be clear, this is
not another anti-cyberbullying campaign. This is bigger than bullying. We have
to peel back the layers and look at the root causes of social media misuse. We have to understand the
ins and outs, and give our young people the know-how to use these incredibly
powerful social media platforms correctly. We don’t want to force-feed
potential bullies rhetoric on what not to do. We want to give young people tools to empower them to build healthy, positive relationships online, and to overcome the dark sides of social media use. Parents, teachers – all of us – have to do our part.
Please support Above The Fray. With your help, we can achieve our goals. Thank you for contributing and sharing.
