Short Summary
ENG: In 1990, one sixth of the Bhutanese population was exiled as a result of simply asking their monarch for democratic rights.
They have since lived in a refugee camp in Nepal, where their plight has been met with total indifference from the international community.
Now they will be "resettled." Thousands of families will be forced to emigrate, and their Lhotshampa identity will disappear forever.
We have lived with these people in Khudunabari - one of their camps- and we have gathered their testimonies. In particular, we followed Sarita, a 13-year-old girl born in the refugee camp.
Everyone expects the story of these refugees to be told in a melodramatic way. Instead, we plan to use irony as a weapon to tell this tragic story. Our film is a musical documentary - a new hybrid. Refugees will not tell us about their past, they will not speak out what it means to lose their identity. They will sing it to us.
IT: Nel 1990, un sesto della popolazione del Bhutan venne esiliato perché chiedeva maggiori diritti democratici al sovrano e da allora vive in un campo profughi in Nepal, nell’indifferenza totale della comunità internazionale.
Ora verranno “ricollocati”. Migliaia di famiglie saranno costrette a emigrare e l’identità Lhotshampa scomparirà.
Noi abbiamo vissuto con loro, a Khudunabari, e abbiamo raccolto le loro testimonianze. In particolare, quella di Sarita, una ragazza di 13 anni, nata nel campo profughi.
Tutti si aspettano che la vicenda di questi profughi venga raccontata in maniera melodrammatica. La nostra scommessa è di credere nell’ironia come arma per raccontare una tragedia. Un musical documentary, un ibrido nuovo. I rifugiati non ci racconteranno il loro passato e non ci spiegheranno cosa vuol dire perdere la propria identità. Ce lo canteranno.
What We Need & What You Get
ENG: We have been working on this film project for ten years. The film exists: the footage has been shot, but we need your help to complete it.
In order to be distributed in theaters this year, we need to complete the post-production process as soon as possible. More specifically, we still have to do the color correction, sound editing and film mixing. Even more importantly, we need to record the traditional music of the Lhotshampa people so that the legacy of their oral culture is not lost.
In order to finish our film, we still need € 25,000 that we will use as follows:
- € 1,500: the director Sergio Basso will go back to Nepal and monitor the recording of the traditional songs of the refugees.
- € 1,000: we will record the Nepali songs in a real recording studio in Kathmandu, so that we will have them in the best possible quality.
- € 6,000: we will have an award-winning composer rearrange the original scores
- € 5,000: we will polish the sound editing: as you know, it’s a musical documentary and the sound section is very important!
- € 3,000: we will mix the film - mixing is another milestone in a musical!
- € 5,000: we will do the color correction: it is a necessary step since the film was shot over many years and the standardization of its various formats is very important
- € 1,500: we will create the credits to highlight all the fundamental people who have made this dream come true - as you have!
- € 2,000: we will create the master: our film will be wrapped and ready to start its path!

ITA: Abbiamo lavorato a questo progetto cinematografico per dieci anni. Il film c’è, è stato girato, ma per completarlo abbiamo bisogno del vostro aiuto.
Per essere distribuito nei cinema quest’anno, abbiamo bisogno di finalizzare il prima possibile il processo di editing. Nello specifico dobbiamo intervenire sulla color-correction, sul montaggio del suono e sul mix del film. E cosa ancor più importante, dobbiamo registrare le musiche tradizionali della popolazione Lhotshampa perché il loro patrimonio di cultura orale non vada perduto. Per effettuare queste ultime operazioni ci servono € 25.000, che verranno così utilizzati:
- € 1.500: volo per far tornare Sergio Basso in Nepal a seguire i lavori di registrazione musiche e soggiorno
- € 1.000: registrazione musiche nepalesi in studio per averle in buona qualità
- € 6.000: compositore per riarrangiamento
- € 5.000: montaggio suono, molto importante dato che si tratta di un musical
- € 3.000: mix, molto importante dato che si tratta di un musical
- € 5.000: color correction, il film è stato girato in un periodo molto lungo e la standardizzazione dei formati di ripresa è uno step davvero molto importante
- € 1.500: titoli di testa e di coda per dare risalto a tutte le magnifiche persone che hanno reso realtà questo sogno, come hai fatto tu!
- € 2.000: finalizzazione e realizzazione master, il nostro film è finito ed è ora pronto a cominciare il suo percorso

The Impact
ENG: It is really important, and urgent, to give voice to this story, unknown to most people. This is a terrible humanitarian crisis, which has affected one sixth of the Bhutanese population and on which there is virtually no media coverage.
No one has ever told their story. Nobody else, apart from us, has obtained the UN authorization to be able to shoot in Khudunabari, where more than 100,000 people have lived for thirty years without electricity, in tin-roofed bamboo huts, and with only 15 kilograms (33 pounds) of black rice to feed each family for an entire month.
This is the result of a campaign to reduce the diversity of cultures in Bhutan, a process sustained by the Bhutanese monarch. From one day to the next, he demanded that everyone dress the same way, worship the same gods, and speak the same national language. In this quest for cultural unification, TV antennas were outlawed and, in a situation reminiscent of George Orwell's 1984, the sovereign was allowed to modify the national archive of historic documents as he pleased. What happened to the Lhotshampa minority has already been expunged from the national archives; the reconstruction of the story of their exile is now entrusted exclusively to their collective memories.
The UN inspectors have been relocating them. Bhutanese exiles will be spread out around the world, divided in groups to different locations, from Bergen, Norway to Annapolis, Maryland. These people just wanted to go back home, but they could not, and now they are being forced to split up, losing their cultural identity forever.
We at La Sarraz Pictures have been fighting every day since 2004 to make independent and passionate cinema. We have produced about twenty films, all of which have premiered at prestigious film festivals, where they received accolades and awards. in 2010 we launched our distribution company, too.
We firmly believe in Tell Me Who I Am, and we consider it an important and valuable film, for both the themes it tackles and its great artistic quality.
ITA: È davvero importante e urgente poter dar voce a questa storia sconosciuta ai più. Si tratta di una terribile crisi umanitaria, che ha colpito un sesto della popolazione del Bhutan e su cui non c'è praticamente copertura mediatica.
Nessuno ha mai raccontato la loro storia. Nessun altro, a parte noi, ha ottenuto l’autorizzazione ONU per poter fare le riprese a Khudunabari, dove più di 100.000 persone da trent’anni vivono senza elettricità in capanne di bambù con tetti in latta, e a cui vengono forniti solamente 15 chili di riso nero al mese per famiglia.
Questo è il risultato di una campagna di “omogeneizzazione” della cultura del paese voluta dal monarca bhutanese. Da un giorno all’altro, ha richiesto che tutti vestissero nello stesso modo, adorassero gli stessi dei e abbandonassero la propria lingua. In questa ricerca di unificazione culturale non erano permesse antenne TV e, in una situazione che ricorda molto 1984 di George Orwell, il sovrano ha iniziato a modificare a suo piacimento l’archivio dei quotidiani. Sulla carta ciò che è successo ai Lhotshampa non esiste più, la ricostruzione del loro esilio è affidato esclusivamente alla somma dei loro ricordi.
Gli ispettori ONU li hanno ricollocati. Gli esiliati bhutanesi sono stati sparsi in tutto il mondo, tra la Norvegia e il Maryland. Queste persone volevano solo tornare a casa, ma non hanno potuto, e ora sono costretti a dividersi, perdendo per sempre così le loro radici culturali.
Noi de La Sarraz Pictures dal 2004 lottiamo quotidianamente per realizzare cinema indipendente e appassionato. Abbiamo prodotto circa venti progetti, tutti presentati e molto spesso premiati nei più prestigiosi festival di cinema, e nel 2010 è iniziata anche la nostra avventura distributiva.
Crediamo molto in Dimmi chi sono, e lo consideriamo un film importante e prezioso sia per le tematiche di cui tratta e per la grande qualità artistica.
Risks & Challenges
ENG: We eventually succeeded in filming this crazy idea, a musical-in-a-refugee-camp, but since starting this film project, one of our greatest challenges has been to explain why we wanted to do it in this way. We are often asked why we want to tell such a tragic story through music and dance. The identity of the Lhotshampa reflects a great oral culture which, as a result of the resettlement process, it at risk of being swept away. Therefore, we have chosen to focus on celebrating and preserving their culture and their traditions. In order to do that, what could be better than turning their traditional dances and songs into the stars of our film? Furthermore, we believe that thanks to music, it will be easier to bring this incredible story to a wider audience.
It took so much time – and a lot of guts, too - to tell the story of this people: they were supposed to stay in Nepal only temporarily but ended up being restrained there for over thirty years for political reasons.
All the hardships and difficulties we faced, before and during the filming in Nepal, have more than paid off. The footage highlights the great artistic quality of the film and we are very proud of ourselves for managing to unify two genres previously considered incompatible-- the musical and the documentary.
We are almost done: once the post-production process has been completed, the film will be ready.
We only have to finish this final phase, and we are confident that you will help us.
After ten years, we have nearly made it to the finish line (it sounds incredible to say that), and we cannot wait to show you the full movie!
ITA: Siamo riusciti a girare un musical in un campo profughi, ma ciò che è stato più difficile, sin da dall’inizio, è stato spiegare perché volessimo farlo proprio in queste modalità. Ci veniva chiesto perché volessimo raccontare una storia così tragica utilizzando balli e musiche. L’identità dei Lhotshampa si fonda su una grande cultura orale e, a causa del processo di reinsediamento, è destinata ad essere spazzata via. Il nostro intento è quindi diventato quello di celebrare e conservare la loro cultura, le loro tradizioni. Per farlo cosa di meglio poteva esserci se non far diventare i loro balli e canti tipici i protagonisti del film? Inoltre, crediamo che attraverso la musica sia più facile far arrivare questa incredibile storia ad un pubblico più ampio.
Ci è voluto tanto tempo quanto coraggio per raccontare le vicende di questo popolo, che doveva rimanere in Nepal solo temporaneamente e invece per questioni politiche c’è stato trent’anni.
Tutte le fatiche e le difficoltà affrontate prima e durante le riprese in Nepal sono state però più che ripagate. Già dal girato si evidenziano le grandi qualità artistiche del film e siamo molto orgogliosi di come siamo riusciti ad unificare due generi così distanti, il musical e il documentario.
Siamo agli sgoccioli, completato il processo di postproduzione il film sarà pronto. Dobbiamo affrontare quest’ultimo ostacolo, ma siamo certi che ci aiuterete. Sembra pazzesco, ma ce l’abbiamo quasi fatta e non vediamo l’ora di mostrarvi il film completo!
