About NextVPU
NextVPU is a start-up in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision domain. NextVPU refers to "Next Vision Processing Unit", which means the vision chips in future. The goal of the company is to bring vision capability to all robots, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), unmanned ground vehicles(UGV) and other smart devices, to create a new era of AI. The company, founded by industry veterans, now is focusing on the R&D of some interesting products. The first product is AngelEye smart glasses, the world's 1st smart glasses to assist visually impaired to perceive the world conveniently and enjoy a safer exploration in an indoor/outdoor environment.

Running test of one blind volunteer with AngelEye Obstacle avoidance test
According to the report of World Health Organization, there are ~285 million visually impaired people including 40 million blind among the world. Walking in an outdoor/indoor environment is one of people’s basic needs, but the blind people takes more safety risks. It’s not safe enough for the blind people going out only by holding the canes, as there are many kinds of obstacles outdoor that are hard to be detected by canes, such as low hanging tree branches, back of a truck, pits, unexpected downstairs etc. Many blind people have experiences of fall, collision and scratches. These challenges have been influencing blind people’s daily life for a long time. To recognize what’s ahead, or to find a remote-control from a desk, or to find a door from the room, is another typical challenge for blind people, who have suffered a lot from these inconveniences.
AngelEye smart glasses' features
Virtual Cane:
The glasses will detect any obstacle that you may hit into, including obstacles higher than road surface and lower than your height, and pits that are deep from the road, then communicate to the user through audio. When the user is approaching the obstacles, the music voice from glass becomes more and more urgent, so that it becomes a kind of warning to the user.
Advanced Recognition:
The glasses will recognize kinds of object categories, that are related with visually impaired people’s daily life, including traffic light, crosswalk, stairs, door, exit, cash note, color, text, people, etc, and tell the user through voice.
Location Reporting:
With a simple push-button, it reports user’s location information, e.g. street name, next cross’ name, distance to the next cross, heading direction, nearby ROIs etc.
Bone Conduction Headphone:
The glasses can perform as a fashion bone conduction headphone for music, phone calls, etc.
Button Control:
The user could switch and control the device’s function conveniently via buttons on the glass.

Warning
It is to be noted that, AngelEye can only work when connected with smartphone through USB cable. Also, AngelEye is to simulate the functionality of the human eyes, and has similar requirement of the luminance. Strong light or darkness would reduce the sight of the device, and the device would report the “seen” results more conservatively due to the consideration of user’s safety. Therefore, we solemnly remind consumers that the device is to assist people to perceive the surroundings but cannot replace the user to make the judge of actions. Visually impaired still need make their own judgment of the surroundings and take the appropriate action, based on all the information perceived.
