Hello, my name is Masashi Kawamura and I am a director of a creative lab called PARTY. I am currently based in New York, working on various film projects. I am posting this project today to ask help from the Indiegogo community, on a film I am making in collaboration with a renowned manga-artist Moyoco Anno. We are creating a short film version of her book “The Diary of Ochibi”. I’m thrilled for this opportunity as I’ve been a fan of Moyoco Anno’s work for a long time.
■ A different method to
turn manga into “animation”
The project
originated when I was invited to participate in the “Japan Anima(tor)'s Exhibition”, which starts this autumn. This project is by Khara, Inc., led by
Hideaki Anno (film director of “Evangelion” which I am also a big fan of!).
This is a large scale project where 25 young directors are selected to create
short animations, in the duration of 4.5 to 6 minutes. These collections of
films will first launch online, and then travel to various film festivals.
Moyoco Anno’s “The Diary of Ochibi” was picked by
Hideaki Anno as one of the scripts, and the editor of the manga Yohei Sadoshima
(Co-founder/CEO of Cork. Inc) invited me in as a director of
this project.

I have never worked on a piece that is based on a manga, so I’m really excited for this challenge. Since I’m not a professional animator, I wanted to create something that uses a slightly different animation technique while still maintaining the atmosphere of “Ochibi”. I suggested to Moyoco that I wanted to animate the manga using “Fuubutsushi (objects that reminds you of a certain season) ”. In the manga, the beauty of Japan’s four seasons is used as a backdrop of each episode, so I decided to use objects that represent the 4 season as the materials to animate the story of the 4 seasons itself. For example, the story of spring is about a short story under the cherry tree, so I am animating it using food inside a picnic lunch box under the cherry blossom tree. Summer – Ochibi will be drawn on a Japanese fan, autumn- Ochibi will be made out of fallen leaves, winter- Ochibi will come to life as a painting on a tea cup.
Spring: Bento lunch box
Summer: Traditional bamboo fan
Autumn: Fallen leaves

Winter: Japanese traditional tea cup
An
amazing production team has gathered to make this film come to life. The animation will be drawn by the animators
from Khara Inc., led by Hideaki Anno, and the animation will be converted into
stop motion by the stop motion studio dwarf inc. – Who is
well known for works include NHK “Domo-kun”.
■What is “Ochibi”?

“Ochibi” is the main character of the comic series "The Diary of Ochibi", written by Moyoco Anno. The story
centres around the everyday of Ochibi, in a nostalgic Japanese town. Each
story is written around the 4 seasons, with is beautifully drawn in water
color. I enjoy reading them when I feel homesick in my New York apartment
:)

■Why use crowd funding?
We
have used crowd funding several times, and every time we feel the pros of crowd
funding is not only to raise money, but to create a relationship between the
fans that can share the excitement with us and push the project forward. Especially
for this project, where we had a lot of happy encounters and collaborations, I
thought it would be great to expand this circle of creators. We are hoping to
find many people who can be excited about this film as much as we are and get
your support.

For
this project, we are planning to use the funding from everyone for the stop
motion production cost. The video would have four sections representing each of
the 4 seasons, and every season would be made out of completely different
animation elements. Because of this, we would have to create a large amount of
Ochibi parts in different materials. For example, in the Summer story, in
order to create 1 minute of film, we need to draw 700 unique fans. As you can
see, we will need to spend a lot of time and cost to create the film. We hope
to cover this cost using everyone’s support.

■Message from Moyoco Anno

(Avobe: "Hope you like the new style of Ochibi! written by Moyoco")
When I first saw Masashi's work, I thought - what would happen if a person who creates such cool and stylish video were told to turn "The Diary of Ochibi" into an animation!? It was
exciting for me to imagine what kind of different approach he will take, and
when I actually received the ideas, all of them were very interesting. I would
like to work together with him to create a new world of “Ochibi”. Truly excited to see the final outcome!
