What We Need & Why
I was a Radio/TV Broadcaster for the American Forces Network (think “Good Morning, Vietnam”) from 1997-2002. While stationed in Germany in 1999, I found myself at a headquarters location with people who were all married and triple my rank. I was essentially alone, in one of the most exciting, yet also perhaps the smallest career field in the military (there were only about 170 of us in the world on the Air Force side) and thousands of miles from anyone who cared about me.
There I was, missing out on the most basic aspect of military service: camaraderie with those I served with. For my own sanity, I started writing a screenplay that took place in a world I wished I were in, with friends I wished I had. Spending time in the universe I created for myself is what got me though.
I had several false starts over the years that never materialized. I decided that the only way I could ever make this a reality was to do it myself. 24 years later, after saving $125K, I finally have the means to bring my fictional world to life. It’ll wipe me out financially, but I’m willing to risk it all to make my 24-year-old dream a reality.
We have an amazing crew and already some incredible talent attached. But it’s disheartening how little $125K gets you when making a feature film. We have talent coming in from LA, Chicago, Austin, Delaware, and even Canada. Everyone has to be paid, flown in, housed, and fed.
We have to rent cameras, lenses, lights, sound equipment, locations, and a thousand other things I never truly considered until I had a thoroughly knowledgeable producer on board. If I want this done right, the money goes fast.
We estimate that we’re already $15K over budget, and we haven’t even started with commercial music rights yet, which is an essential part of this film. As it takes place in 1999, two tracks from Jimmy Eat World’s Clarity album are essential, as well as songs from MXPX, Black Lab, Baby Gopal, and Zebrahead. The money raised will go towards music and unforeseen production costs.
This script got quite a bit of attention when I wrote the first draft in 1999 and nearly sold to a studio. Studios don’t make movies like this anymore, but what once was, can be again. And Another Day is about a simpler time, focusing on friends and life lessons about love and heartache throughout some hilarious situations.
Our main producer has written and directed several of his own features, and his expertise is already proving invaluable to Another Day. While we already have several options for distribution, our goal is start with studios and film festivals. Another Day is a film that deserves the big screen treatment and a large audience. If you enjoyed movies such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Swingers, then Another Day should be on your must-see list!
