Whitesburg, United States
$13,185 USD 136 backers
82% of $16,000 Flexible Goal Flexible Goal
Today we are asking for your support to help carry out media preservation and outreach projects that originated in 2013 and will run through 2014. The Appalshop Archive is the recipient of a grant from the National Film Preservation Foundation that will pay for lab costs to preserve unique moving image materials about aspects of life in eastern Kentucky. Due to budget cuts and the economic downturn, we need donations to help complete the preservation and carry out the exhibition phase for these at-risk, rarely seen films, which include:

Civilian Conservation Corps in Pine Mountain State Park
, a rare 1938 silent b/w film documenting CCC workers and their camp near Pineville, Kentucky.

Coal Camp: Life Below the Tipple
, an unreleased Appalshop color film (circa 1972) about life in a Harlan County coal camp.

And a selection of 16mm color home movies shot in the 1950's and 60's by John Parrott, a Bell County, Kentucky coal camp doctor.

We need your help to cover staff costs for overseeing the preservation of the 16mm films, managing the work of the project, and making these historical treasures accessible to the public. A major portion of the funds raised for the project will support further planning and implementation of an array of outreach activities during 2014, such as:

  • A series of screenings/discussions across the state at various sites in Louisville, Lexington, Frankfort, Pineville, Whitesburg, and Harlan County in cooperation with the Filson Historical Society, Bell County Historical Museum, University of Kentucky Appalachian Center, among others.
  • Special events held in tandem with the activities of: Home Movie Day, a celebration of amateur films and filmmaking held annually during October at many local venues worldwide; and the annual Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival, the oldest continuous event of its kind in the United States.

About Us
Since its founding in 1969 Appalshop's mission has been to document, disseminate, and revitalize the lasting traditions and contemporary creativity of the region. The Appalshop Archive grew out of this mission and works to preserve the creative output and history of the independent, non-profit organization, as well as orphaned media materials donated to the Archive's collections that help enrich our understanding of the history, culture, art, and social issues of central Appalachia.
