Entrance to Restoration
The historic buildings at the Arizona State Fairgrounds need
your help. Maintenance and renovation are needed, but in order to do that
properly, complete sets of measured drawings are needed, as the originals have
been lost. Some of the buildings were constructed under the Works Progress
Administration (WPA) of the New Deal program.
Local materials were combined with cutting edge technology.
Several of the buildings have adobe walls with Lamella truss roofs, the same
structural system used on the Wellington bomber in WW2.
Measured drawings were traditionally created by hand using
lots of ladders. They followed standards set by the Historic American Building
Survey, another New Deal program. Today, such an undertaking on these buildings
would take months. Using modern technology of lasers, we will be laser scanning
the buildings in under one week. Drones will be used to capture the details out
of sight. For example, the roof of the Grandstand has an arrow painted on it.
That arrow originally was used to help point pilots in the direction of the
Phoenix airport. We want to capture and preserve this aspect of our Region’s
history.
GG George, President of the Encanto Citizens Association talks about the project.
Requirements and Perks of the Job
To complete the project from scanning to drawings in hand, we need $42,000. Our local community has already raised $7,000. Your contribution will enable us to capture the data, but will have longer value in that with the drawings in hand, the State Fairgrounds can begin much needed maintenance and also apply for State and Federal funding to restore these iconic buildings.
The drawings will also be submitted to the Library of Congress for preservation and a lasting heritage for generations to come.
*All contributions go to the Arizona Preservation Foundation
With any contribution you will receive a part of Arizona history. The restoration project will be well documented and we would like to share the in the joy by providing a link to a documentary video. We will also send an electronic copy of a photo of the project autographed by the team members.
At the $500 level we will add actual electronic architectural HABS (Historic American Building Survey) drawings of one of the Fairground buildings.
If you would like to have your name engraved on a brick that is used in the restoration project, we will be happy to provide that opportunity at $1000 contribution. This also includes the HABS Architectural Drawing of a building, autographed photo and the documentary video.
If you would like to contribute $5000, we would love to send you a 3D
printed model keepsake of the building of your choice. We will also provide the HABS Architectural Drawings to all of the buildings. We will customize our documentary video to include your name or organization in the credits along with a personal message from the restoration team.
