Our Story
Mt. Diablo Peace & Justice Center was founded in 1969. Since then the Center has provided the community with alternative views to violence and war. We strive to demonstrate that a peaceful world based on justice for all people is possible the Center has consistently worked locally in Contra Costa Country to provide venues for people to experience peace through classes, public forums and educational programs.
What We Need & What You Get
This is the 15th year of the Art and Writing Challenge, a program that presents awards to outstanding students grades 6-12 in the areas of essay, creative writing and art in many mediums. The Center mails flyers and letters to every Principal, School Counselor, Art, English, Social Studies and History teacher in every public and private school in Contra Costa County. This outreach returns approximately 300-400 entries every year, a significantly higher number than the 25 entries received in 2005. The entries are judged by independent judges. The winning students are rewarded with a dinner for their families and teachers that includes a public reading or comments of their work as well as cash awards. The program also publishes a full-color calendar with student art work that may include entries than winning entries.
The Impact & Purpose
Our purpose is to work for a culture of peace through education, advocacy and community building. MDPJC works to build a more peaceful and just world through citizen involvement. We work to eliminate nuclear weapons, reduce militarism, heal the causes of violence such as racism and injustice, and promote nonviolent conflict resolution.
We believe that peace must be kept on all levels, from international relations to our relations with our very selves. We are creating an organizing force that takes unfocused dissatisfaction with war and injustice and provides a more peaceful, sustainable and co-operative way to take that energy and create a better world.
