Short Summary

The Autrey House was built in 1849 by Absalom Autrey and his family in beautiful Dubach, Louisiana.  He migrated from Perry, Alabama seeking available land for farming, timber and to raise his family.  Several generations of Autrey's lived in the home from the mid 1800's to the 20th century.  The home was actually occupied until the 1970's as a rental property.  In the 1980's, ownership of the Autrey House was transferred to the Lincoln Parish Museum, a non-profit historical society located in Ruston, Louisiana near Dubach.  The home was also designated as an official historic landmark and stands today as one of the few remaining examples of the "dog trot" style home from the 1800's.

A little about me, Gary Gray:  My great grandmother was Mary Pearl Autrey Tubbs and she was raised in the Autrey Home.  Her father and my great-great grandfather, Charles Henry Autrey was actually born in the house and lived there his entire life.  Today, I proudly serve in a promotions and fundraising role with the Lincoln Parish Museum to raise money for the house related to needed repairs and ongoing maintenance.

Contributed funds go directly to the Lincoln Parish Museum for the sole purpose of repairing and maintaining the Autrey House Museum.   The Lincoln Parish Museum is an official 501(c)(3) non-profit entity with the sole purpose of preserving historically significant landmarks, buildings and structures in Lincoln Parish and even surrounding Parishes.

What We Need & What You Get

The Autrey House underwent repairs and restorations over 20 years ago.  Time and exposure to the elements over this period of time has naturally caused the need to repair, restore and maintain the home.  We need to fund a professional inspection of the house, along with a restoration plan that is funded to complete in a timely manner.  The home needs critical repairs to the foundation, structural support beams and other routine maintenance.

What you get by helping us restore and preserve this beautiful historic landmark is a sense of historic preservation and knowing that you helped make a difference.

The Impact

Not only is this project important to Autrey descendant's living today, but it is also an important historic treasure of not only Louisiana, but our nation.  America was built by people just like the Autrey's, hard working, honest people who farmed, hunted and fished their land, building our nation to the country it is today.

Risks & Challenges

The primary risk is the risk of doing nothing.  The Autrey House has stood since the mid 1800's and is open to the public today as a rare example of what life was like once upon a time.  Our goal is to continue maintaining the home for future generations so that our children and their children can enjoy this historic landmark into the future.
