BAD GIRL BOOGEY
BAD GIRL BOOGEY is a new queer slasher by Alice Maio Mackay and the team that made the award-winning queer coming-of-age vampire film SO VAM.
One Halloween, blood was shed by the wearer of a parasitic mask cursed with black magic and bigotry. Sixteen years later, when Angel’s best friend is slaughtered by a killer with the same mask, they must overcome their personal struggles, fight their fear, and find the masked killer before he, or it, slaughters everyone they hold dear.
BAD GIRL BOOGEY features a guest voice-over performance by Bill Moseley, star of Rob Zombie films like THE DEVIL’S REJECTS, HALLOWEEN and 3 FROM HELL.
OUR PURPOSE
Horror is at its most powerful when it is important, and the most important horror is that which reflects the real-life struggles of humanity through the power of allegory. For SO VAM we took the vampire narrative out of its origins in the demonization and scapegoating of sexualities and minorities and made it a genre of their empowerment. For BAD GIRL BOOGEY we are taking the slasher out of the hands of the Reaganite 80s mentality of punishment and violence and making it a powerful and resonant allegory for the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community, and all of those who are hated and outcast. Our killer is hate emboldened by toxic ideology, our “last girl” one who must overcome not only the killer, but the mentality that fuels it.
BAD GIRL BOOGEY is about found family, community, and the importance of seizing the day and standing up against bigotry and oppression.
THE STORY
Twelve years ago, Angel’s mother was one of the victims of a killing spree by the wearer of an ancient parasitic mask that empowers the unleashes the hatred of all who wear it. As a teen in the last days of high school, Angel and their friends struggle to find their place in a world that rejects them. When the mask is found and the killings start again, Angel must overcome all that stands in the way of finding out who or what the masked killer is, and stopping them before they lose another of their found family to the violence of hate.
WHAT WE WILL DO
SO VAM was praised for its powerful storytelling and its striking style, and BAD GIRL BOOGEY will be even better. Director Alice Maio Mackay and co-writer have penned a fast-paced and gut-wrenching story set in a mad and twisted world that returning master Cinematographer Aaron Schuppan will paint in light and colour.
There will be things in the movie that you have never seen in a slasher film, and things that will be familiar but subverted. BAD GIRL BOOGEY is an entertaining ghost train ride, but not one you’ll be able to predict. It’ll make you think, but it’ll keep you on the edge of your seat while you’re doing it.
