What is it?
Baddies: the Musical is a brand spanking new musical
written by Nancy Harris and Marc Teitler that explores the behind-the-scenes
lives of everyone’s favourite fairy-tales villains. The Big Bad Wolf, Captain Hook, Cinderella (No, she's not quite as sweet as she'd have you believe...) It’s a rollercoaster of a
ripping yarn that’s got everything: good guys, bad guys and catchy songs that you’ll
be singing the whole way home for Christmas. The only thing it doesn’t have is
an album of its amazing soundtrack…YET.
Why we need your support?
Musicals are
notoriously expensive beasts - which is why they remain the domain of West End producers
and Broadway moguls. Think Les Mis, Mama Mia, Cats. Large-scale productions, no expense spared. It’s rare that a
mid-sized theatre company devoted to making plays for children would have the
ambition, determination - let alone the drive - to commission an all new
original musical, as it’s just too much of a risk. Yet the Unicorn Theatre (the
UK’s leading theatre for young audiences) has done just that. And Baddies: the Musical is going to be
their Christmas 2015 show!
But while
that’s unbelievably exciting, unfortunately the expense of putting together a
production of this size and scale means there’s nothing left in the budget to
make an album of the soundtrack. And that’s why we need your help…
Why is it so important to make a soundtrack?
When people
see a musical and they love the songs, they tend to want to sing along. Let’s
face it – that’s kind of the point.
And the more people that sing along, the more chance that musical has of going on again, and again, and again. Think Chicago, think Cats, think Les Mis (again.) Where would any of them be without their soundtrack? Nowhere, probably.
And THINK, how frustrating it would be to come out of a killer musical having fallen in love with the music only to find there’s no way of ever hearing it again. Depressing right?
And we want as many people as possible to see this show and to sing the songs. But that won’t be possible if there’s no album for them to access.
So the
writer and composer of Baddies: the
Musical have taken to Indiegogo to ask our friends, family, colleagues,
acquaintances, strangers - basically anyone we can find! - if you can help us
turn our dream of making a Baddies: the
Musical album into a reality. We’ve spent three years writing these songs,
we don’t want them to disappear without a trace. But that may happen without
your generosity…
Where will your money go?
Albums are expensive to produce, you have to
hire recording studios, you have to hire engineers, you have to pay musicians
and singers according to equity contracts. And while we are willing to do as
much of the work as we can for no money at all (we really do believe in it THAT
much) we can’t ask other artists to do the same (it’s against the law for
starters!)
So we’ve come
up with a budget that is pretty low on the scale compared to glitzy West End musicals, but should allow us to get all the people we need into one room and sing their
lungs out for your listening pleasure.
Why time is of the essence
There is of
course one more juicy detail to make this already epic challenge truly Indiana
Jonesesque in its proportions and that is… we have only 2 weeks to raise the
money. Yes you heard right – TWO WEEKS!
Our show opens
in less than two months. In that time not only will actors need to learn their
lines, designers need to build the set, costume-makers sew the costumes and
lighting technicians light the stage - but we will need to have the album
recorded, mixed and on the stands in time for the opening night. That means we
have to raise the money in the NEXT TWO weeks in order for Baddies: the Musical album to be a reality.
So we really
don’t have any time to waste! And nor do you.

You Need The Bad Guy
Yes you do! And
that's also the title of one of our songs. And to give you a taster, below is a demo of the backing track for the song 'You Need The Bad Guy' (which we recorded at a rehearsal). We recorded it without the lead vocal as it was only a band rehearsal but it should give you an idea of the energy of the piece.
It's rough, but hopefully it's enough to convince you that Baddies: the Musical album is worth making. Enjoy!
