Story of My Book
Beyond the Byline: A Look Into The Future of WritingMy name is Lindsay Wigo and I am the author of Beyond the Byline. I wrote this book because I wanted to dive deeper into the different careers that exist in the journalism and media world. Beyond The Byline is a non-fiction book that speaks to young journalists and media lovers who are looking at the future of the industries and how to make yourself stand out for the first time.
My hope is that in reading this book, you will discover there is a lot more to a writing career than just reporting. There is an abundance of ways to hone in on your writing. I hope to instill the same sort of passion and excitement that I have for journalism and media in you. And then ultimately, I want you to see this book as a tool to help you decide where you want to take your talents in the future.
In this book, you'll learn about the intersection of business and journalism and the future of digital media. More specifically...
- The past of journalism— with some help from Jason Feifer.
- The rise of digital media— from YouTube channels like Jubilee and Cut.
- The different media careers - like public relations agency owner, TV news reporter, Editor-In-Chief, video researcher and so many more!
You will love this book if you have a list of passions that fall into both journalism and media— or you want to explore both!
The Book - Beyond the Byline
The book is written in 6 parts...
Part 1 contains the introduction + a chapter on a brief history of journalism, with help from a few professionals. You’ll learn about why I chose to write this book, a bit of background info on journalism’s recent history and the 2019 media job cuts. You’ll hear from Entrepreneur Magazine’s Editor-In-Chief, Jason Feifer!
Part 2 contains chapter 2, which is focused on building a business. You’ll hear from Kate Beckman, a woman who started a college lifestyle platform as a freshman when she realized there was a lack of articles on what it was like to be a freshman in college.
Part 3 contains chapter 3, which is all about taking advantage of social media. You'll hear stories from a TV news reporter, Clancy Burke, who runs a YouTube channel on the side to show her behind the scenes life as a reporter. This section includes tips on growing your social media to help expand and promote your passions.
Part 4 contains chapter 4, which answers some questions you're too nervous to ask— like how do I find out what type of writing I'm good at? How much do I charge for my work? What should my website look like? You'll learn more about my journalism background and some tips I have for fellow creatives. Just some honesty from writer to writer.
Part 5 contains chapter 5, which focuses on branching out of your comfort zone and changing things up within your career. You'll hear from some people who jumped from career to career, like Rahkal Shelton, who ended up finding a passion for working with kids and formed that into a career. You'll also hear a fun story of how one woman met and interviewed TV personality, Andy Samberg.
Part 6 contains chapter 6, which touches on solutions to different journalism problems we see arising. At this point, we've come full circle and continue to talk about the future of journalism!

About the Author
Lindsay Wigo is a writer and editor with more than three years of experience in digital journalism. With a lifelong passion for writing starting in elementary school, she was very excited to branch into the journalism and digital media worlds.
Oftentimes, people think that great writers are destined to be great reporters— and nothing else. However, talented writers can be entrepreneurs, videographers, YouTubers, teachers and so much more. With a passion for many different areas of media and journalism, it can be hard to decide where you want to end up. It can be overwhelming to dig through dozens of careers. This book is aimed to help anyone figure out where they might want to end up— by hearing from people in those positions!

Risks & Challenges
The biggest challenge with publishing a book is delivering the finished book to the backer, specifically my mailing of the book to you. I have eliminated this risk by building into the campaign the mailing and shipping costs of your signed copies to you within each pre-order tier.
The risk of delivering the pre-sale copies of my book is contingent on the publisher we use. I will be working closely with New Degree Press to make sure we get the earliest possible ship date of the signed book copy to you. We will keep all pre-sale backers up-to-date as my book hits each key milestone and publishes. You will know when the copies of my book you pre-ordered are expected to ship.
