Overview
We are excited to bring to the screen, for the first time in a generation, the true story of the Black Donnellys. This 43 minute film is based on an extensively researched screenplay, advised by leading Donnelly book authors & historians, created by an award winning team of film makers, starring an incredibly talented cast, and filmed where it occurred in the 1800s. There will even be a red carpet Premiere right here in Southwestern Ontario with VIP access for some Indiegogo supporters,

                                   The Project in a Nutshell

The Black Donnellys movie features a true Canadian story with elements of the frontier western, classic horror, adventure, romance, and courtroom thriller. There have been books and plays written about it, the story is taught in Public school history classes. It has gone beyond history into Canadian folklore. A    generation ago nearly every Ontarian knew the tale and by  preserving this story through the movie lens we can ensure it is    told for generations to come. Our extensive research has also  exposed key, little known details that fascinate while bringing to light not only the climactic events, but also the actual causes of the escalating feud. It’s about time the world knew the truth about Canada’s own - Black Donnellys.

The Budget

Our 2016 historical film Red Ryan was well received, premiering for a crowd of 1,343 people and winning awards in a variety of festivals and competitions across North America. After Red Ryan one Producer called us "the most frugal film makers on the planet". However, frugal or not, the Black Donnellys is a big story with significant costs and we want to tell it right. We hope to raise about 40% of the total production budget through this Indiegogo campaign. The funds will cover direct production costs such as: feeding the volunteer cast and crew, production insurance, renting horses/wagons/stagecoach, location fees, travel costs for out of town cast/crew, props & costumes, equipment rental to supplement our own equipment. If we raise sufficient funds beyond our goal we will switch our production planning to our 95 minute feature film screenplay. In addition to Grants and out-of-pocket investment, our Indiegogo Campaign will hopefully raise the last $8,000 we need to cover the production budget.

Background

We have been researching the history now for years. In fact, we first visited Lucan 13 years ago and were met by a cold reception. You see, for generations the small Ontario town of Lucan has harboured a deep, dark secret. A secret many took to their graves and refused to pass on to future generations. Recently the good people of Lucan have embraced their town's spotty past and opened up about the events that put Lucan on the map and continue to make it a tourist destination today.

We also had the privilege to chat directly with Donnellys author Nate Hendley, the Lucan museum curators, and acclaimed Donnellys author Ray Fazakis - who has been researching the event for more than 50 years. What all of this has done is give us the most clear and unbiased  perspective possible from which to tell this true Canadian story. Admit it, since the first time you heard the legend of the Black Donnellys you wanted to know what was true, what was not and why it happened. Now you can, but we need your help.

Last year we ran a successful Indiegogo campaign for the historical fiction short film Red Ryan. Building on the interest of that history film, and the folklore and fandom around the Black Donnellys we're doubling down. We’re taking every dollar that was raised from the Red Ryan screening and betting black, putting it into The Black Donnellys project.  But this project is a period piece, with stage coaches, horses, and a cast of dozens. These things don’t come cheap, so we need your help. We have set up a variety of Perks to choose from. Everything from pre-purchasing a combo DVD with the Red Ryan and Black Donnellys movies to VIP passes to the World Premiere, t shirts, film making internships, credit as a Movie Producer, props from the film and more. You can help us make this movie a reality, and follow the production start to finish via  Facebook with behind the scenes photos, video, exclusive content, and more.

Just like the Red Ryan movie, we are going to license Canadian schools to screen the Black Donnellys movie free of charge, no strings attached. We also hope to build an audience hungry for more productions of well researched, quality history films. Its a labour of love, but its so important to preserve our history for future generations to learn and experience.
