Volume II
New York was on fire as Steve Smith, along with his wife and two daughters, escaped to sea. Searching for refuge from the devastation of a worldwide biological “zombie” plague, they scavenge for sustenance and face the threat of the infected among floating graveyards of watercraft scattered across the Atlantic Ocean. The discovery of fellow survivors leaves Steve, Stacey, Sophia, and Faith with difficult questions and crucial choices. Do they stick to their original plan and go it alone while laying low, or risk their own lives even further by taking a chance on these lost souls? Who, if anyone, can they trust? Is there a greater purpose out there beyond just living another day? As they grapple with the realities of survival and try to hold on to some semblance of humanity, one more question remains unspoken in their minds and hearts, going back to the day they left New York.
He risked everything to warn them at the start, before official word of the virus got out. His last radio transmission urged them to set sail immediately out of New York Harbor, right after a chain of explosions destroyed all the bridges going into and out of Manhattan.
What happened to Tom?
Tom Smith, former special operations soldier, and current Director of Security & Emergency Response for Bank of the Americas, is beset on all sides. A vaccine for the deadly H7D3 virus, developed with the vast resources at his disposal, offered some measure of hope. It isn’t being produced fast enough. Swarms of feral infected grow by the hour, creeping ever closer to the Manhattan skyscrapers that represent the last bastion of the old world. Tom brokered a fragile truce; it kept the corporations, the city’s remaining government officials, the dwindling numbers of police, and various street gangs cooperating to produce critical vaccine supplies, but it’s coming apart at the seams. The rapid advance of the infected hordes, and increasingly hostile gamesmanship among the factions, force Tom to rely on incomplete backup plans and bargains of necessity with unsavory characters in order to preserve his hopes of restarting civilization on the American mainland.
Time is running out, and the usual corporate remedy of Lawyers, Guns, and Money won't stop the end of the world. Tom must rely on a small group of trusted allies, and an unshakable determination forged in the fires of past conflicts, for any of his people to have a chance at leaving New York alive.
It may already be too late...
