How Blossom Blast Was Born and Why It Is Important
ブロッサム・ブラスト（通称BB）が発足した経緯とその重要性

My name is Miki Saito and I am a Japanese female artist who grew up both in Japan and abroad. I am passionate about art as a form of self-expression and as a vehicle for change. In 2016, while working with the TokyoDex, we came up with the concept for “Blossom Blast,” an all-female exhibition that would both showcase the amazing talent pool of female artists in Japan while helping raise awareness for gender inequality, an important issue that is under-discussed in Japan.
女性アーティストの1人として“Blossom Blast/ブロッサム・ブラスト”の企画に携わっています、サイトウ ミキといいます。幼いころから日本と海外を行き来して育ち、アートをこよなく愛しています。アートは私にとって自己表現であり、「変化」のためのツールでもあります。
TokyoDex と一緒にアートのお仕事していた2016年、私たちはBBを企画しました。展示作品を女性の手によるものに限定し、日本で活躍する女性アーティストを紹介するとともに、この国では議論が進んでいない男女の格差問題について関心を高めること、そして女性活躍促進の応援をすることが、この展示会のねらいでした。
Our friends at UltraSuperNew Gallery loved the idea, and despite having less than a month to pull the whole thing together, the response from both the female artists we reached out to and the support from the general public we received was incredible. Over 750 people came out to the 2-week exhibition and Google searches for “IWD2016 Japan” puts Blossom Blast 2016 at the top of the list. It was so clear we were serving an under-served community and we had to continue.
昨年は展示会の発案から実行までの期間は1か月を切っていましたが、UltraSuperNewギャラリーから企画への賛同と出展した女性アーティスト達からの協力もあり、 展示会は大盛況に終わりました。2週間の開催期間中に来場者は750人を超え、「IWD2016 Japan」（＊IWD：「国際女性の日」の略）というキーワードでGoogle検索のトップに表示されるほどの注目を集めました。アーティスト達にとっても来場者にとってもこのような大変意義のある展示であった事は明らかであり、今後もこの活動を続けていく必要があると強く感じています。

By continuing BB, we are providing a voice for women in a country where the stark reality of gender equity in Japan remains stagnant. In a recent survey by the World Economic Forum, Japan was ranked 111th among 145 nations on the Equality Index despite enjoying the third largest economy in the world. Studies show that increased diversity in the workplace leads to better productivity for all workers, and with a rapidly ageing population, it is certain that the empowerment of Japanese women in society is pivotal to Japan’s future prosperity.
今年もまたBBを開催することで、男女格差が縮まらない厳しい現実を、アート業界から日本社会へ訴えるのと同時に、女性たちに発言の場を提供していきたいのです。世界経済フォーラムの最近の調査によると、日本は世界第3位の経済大国であるにも関わらず、男女平等ランキングでは145ヶ国中 111位となっています。職場の多様性が高まると、そこで働く全員の生産性が向上するという調査結果もあります。急速に高齢化が進む日本では、女性の社会的地位の向上が、日本の将来のためにも極めて重要といわれています。
As women march across the globe to reassert the importance of their inalienable rights, there has never been a more important time for the artists to partake in this cause through creativity. Please support our cause and join the movement to keep this going!
現在、Women’s March (女性たちの行進)というデモが世界中で繰り広げられ、女性の格差や権利について考える機会を設ける動向があります。このようなときだからこそ、アーティストたちは表現という形で社会と共鳴しながら、影響を与える事ができるのではないかと考えています。BBの趣旨へのご賛同、ご支援をよろしくお願いいたします。一緒にこのムーブメントを盛り上げましょう。

Why We Need Your Help
ご支援いただきたい内容
BB is a non-for profit exhibition, and everyone on our team as well as our speakers have volunteered their time towards this project. However, we have some hard costs to cover including shipping, gallery space, printing costs, et al. The bottom line for us is $5,000 to support out-of-pocket costs, but we have set our goal at $10,000 for the following reasons:
*Supporting female artists is paramount to our cause and we are insisting on paying the artists for their contribution to the campaign. A portion of your donation will go directly to the artists who are also volunteering towards BB.
* To cover gallery and staffing costs, which is essential to sustainability of this project. We also plan to make a video documentary that includes artist interviews and coverage of the events that take place in the gallery.
BBチームはこの企画をボランティアで運営しています。しかし、作品の運搬費やギャラリー運営費などの経費は発生してしまいます。今回の最低目標額は必要経費の5,000ドルですが、できれば1万ドルを集めたいと思っています。5,000ドルを超える皆さまの寄付の一部は、以下のように使われます。
- ギャラリーの施設利用費と人件費に使用。また、アーティストへのインタビューやギャラリー内で行われるイベントを撮影して、ドキュメンタリー映像を制作したいと思っています。インターネットを通して、東京から世界へこの活動の記録画像や映像を発信していく事は、今後の日本社会を変えていく大きな一歩になるのではないかと考えています。そして、どんな活動においても、継続していくということが最重要だと思っています。この予算は今年だけではなく、未来のBBの活動をも支える上で大きな意味を持ちます。
